The worship of lay people (worldly, catholic and parish [1] , much less often - without priestly, without holy words [2] ) - Christian worship , performed in the absence of a priest and without the Eucharist [3] . The form - dinner (4) (not to be confused with mass ) - is a meeting of believers with the reading of prayers , the singing of Christian hymns and the reading of Holy Scripture . Such services are held by the laity themselves.

The divine service of the lay rank originates in antiquity, when the monks of the Anchorites rarely took the priesthood and invited the priest to attend the Divine Liturgy, or they themselves came to the general service on the appointed day, then leaving for the rest of the day in their cell or hermitage and performing the services ordered by the time themselves without Priest [8] . In ancient Russia, believers gathered together as a whole “home church” and read over the evening - over the penheque, and early in the morning - the midnight plate [8] . In Russia, the practice of divine services by the lay rank has received a great deal of forced distribution among the Old Believers — the Bezopovites . At the end of the 18th century, in Russian Alaska, Aleuts and Eskimos were baptized with a lay order [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] , and later at the beginning of the 19th century laymen served as a lay rank for the legendary Fort Ross [19] [ 20] , and at the end of the XIX century. in the Canadian terrain with the Russian name Vostok, regular divine services were organized by laymen, who enjoyed great success and were even visited by representatives of other Christian denominations from nearby areas [21] . Divine service for laymen was practiced during the years of Soviet repression against the clergy [22] [23] [24] [25] [26] [27] : Christians secretly assembled at home or even in the forests [28] , in remote villages; far from the attentive supervision of atheistic authorities, the believers gathered in “informal” prayer houses for great holidays and prayed, composing service as best they could [8] . A special need for this arose in the event of the death of any of the villagers, and then the old women read and sang the rite of funeral, omitting priestly exclamations and prayers [8] . Often in the working districts, residential and commercial municipalized houses were rented out at prayer houses, in one, for example, Gorky krai, there were up to 1,500 prayer houses [29] [30] . In the Soviet years, the catacomb movement [31] [32] [33] became widespread, in which, one may suppose, the lay order had not the last meaning in the preservation of Christian piety. The lay ministry turned out to be relevant in the first post-Soviet years, when there were still relatively few priests [34] [35] .
Now the divine service of the lay person is found on some rural ones (the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in the village of Kozhino [36] , the Temple of Elijah the Prophet of the village of Lesnoy [37] [38] and the St. John the Baptist Church in the village of Sumarokovo [39] of the Moscow Region , the Church of St. Basil the Great Khokhryaks of Udmurtia [40] , Tver Region [41] , Arkhangelsk Region [42] , Khabarovsk Territory [43] , St. Michael the Archangel Church in the village of Malaya Kema, Primorsky Territory [44] , a precedent in Kamchatka [45] , the chapel of St. Nicholas is known. Seraphim of Sarov on the island of Novaya Zemlya [46] , the parish of St. Alexander Nevsky with. Valuevka to Omsk field [47] , the Holy Cross Chapel at the polar station Sannikov [48] [49] [50] ) and urban (Temple right. John of Kronstadt , the Pestovo Novgorod region [51] , The temple in honor of New Martyrs and Confessors Russian Primorsk, Leningrad Oblast [52] , Vvedensky Church of Murmansk [53] , Parish of the Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva in Volgograd [54] ) parishes. The need for lay services also arises in the Siberian region, where the Orthodox mission is active: Chukotka [55] [56] [57] [58] [59] , Yakutia [60] [61] [62] [63] , Tuva [64] [65] [66] . Sometimes co-religionists are forced to perform the service of worldly rank because of the small number of priests who hold the old rite [67] [68] [69] [70] .
Also the divine service of the layman’s rank became widespread in the Estonian Orthodox Church [71] , the Finnish Orthodox Church [72] [73] , at least until recently practiced in the Japanese Orthodox Church [74] , the Chinese Orthodox Church [75] [76] [ 75] 77] [78] [79] [80] [81] [82] [83] [84] , the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad in the United States [85] [86] [87] [88] , Costa Rica [89] [90] [91] , Germany [92] , Denmark [93] [94] , Ireland [95] , Portugal [96] , Pakistan [97] , temples of the Moscow Patriarchate in Thailand [98] [99] [100] [ 101] and Great Britain [102] , the Transfiguration Church of Antioch Patriarchate of Guatemala [103] [104] , Cambodia [105] [106] , Vietnam [107] , Philippines [108] [109] , Hawaii under the jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church in America [110] . This practice is found in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church [111] [112] . There are Russian communities that pray in a worldly order in Brazil [113] . In the Philippines, a book was being prepared on the divine service of the lay rank in the local language by the Orthodox Missionary Society named after St. Serapion Kozheozersky [114] [108] . There have been cases of worldly services in Antarctica [115] .
The lay services can be held in the temple itself , the chapel (its name is precisely due to the reading of the clock service [116] ), at home or in prayer houses specially equipped for this purpose, in specially allocated rooms, at roadside kiots, at worship crosses , finally, in the open.
Church canons indicate the need for the baptism of a lay person in extreme situations [117] . There is a rank of lithium , performed by a lay person in the home and in the cemetery [118] .
What the lay service gives laymen
The worship of the lay person is a brilliant school for practicing it. It raises the level of liturgical culture and literacy of the parishioners, draws them deeper into worship and draws them, introduces the order of church services and the content of liturgical books [119] . Practicing lay services increases the level of discipline of parishioners in the absence of a clergyman and prepares them for various force majeure , when the priest is not around. After studying the practice of lay service in practice, it is easy to conduct services at home with family (which is a small church [120] [121] [122] [123] ), especially if one of the household members is seriously ill or cannot leave to the temple for other reasons. And since the structure of the rite is such that it is possible to serve them regardless of gender and age, the old pious Christians still have access to the old tradition of engaging in prayer for the whole family of a younger child or in poor health while the rest work [124] . Conducting lay services can help parents and teachers in educating children in the spirit of Orthodoxy [119] . In a non-Orthodox and non-Orthodox environment, the holding of services by a lay person helps to maintain their faith and communication with the Church, protects against the danger of sectarian or heretical influence and, in addition, allows them to remember and honor Orthodox holidays and the days of saints [119] . Although the accomplishment of the services of the daily circle by the laity, of course, is not fully functional in the statutory sense , but it places emphasis on the text to be read and sung, and therefore, with careful and reverent fulfillment, it may well be practiced for the spiritual benefit of the parishioners [8] . Moreover, it is also important here that the divine service of a lay person unites scattered Orthodox people in faith and love for the Orthodox Church [119] .
Conducting divine services by a lay person can unite the parish when performing important charitable work, for example, carrying out labor obedience [125] or restoring the temple [7] . This is a unique way to pay tribute to the numerous half-ruined, abandoned temples that are awaiting their restoration [126] , to return to them a prayer and to revive the liturgical life in them.
In addition to being a powerful missionary tool, worship by a lay person helps to solve the most serious catechizing tasks. So in many correctional institutions of Russia lay services are served, in which convicts [127] [128] [129] [130] [131] [132] actively participate, which has a beneficial effect on their spiritual growth and socialization . Employees of the colonies also participate in the services [131] . There are precedents of lay services and in the adaptation of former prisoners [133] [134] .
More about rank
It is necessary to single out the divine services performed by the monks in accordance with the “lay order” [135] [136] [137] [138] , and the lay worship proper in the world. In the first case, sometimes they even speak of a “monastic rank,” although in structure it is an ordinary lay order. So served about. Seraphim (Rose) and Fr. Herman (Podmoshensky) in Platinum before being ordained priestly [139] . So serve the nuns in convents, when there is no priest. It is known that prp. Paisiy Svyatrets independently read out the services of the day-worshiping circle [140] [141] [142] .
To date, the lay order has been preserved in two forms - the old believer and the new believer. The difference between the Old Believer form is that with her the service goes according to pre-orthodox texts.
All the services of the daily liturgical circle of the horology , with the exception of the Liturgy , can be read as a lay order [143] :
- Midnight ( Midnight Office )
- Matins
- Hours normal and easter [144] ( English Canonical Hours )
- Hourly , or Interdochasia ( English Inter-Hours )
- Pictorial ( English Typica ) or Dinner
- Vespers ( English Vespers )
- Compline , or Povechernitsa ( English Compline )
Instead of the Liturgy, the lay order is served as the Iconic ( Greek τυπικά [145] ), a more correct translation is the “statutory (readings)” [146] , also called the porter . Other services available for the layman:
- Akathist ( English Akathist )
- Canon ( English Canon )
- Li (normal [147] and Easter [148] ), including the funeral [149] ( eng. Lity )
- Requiem [150] ( Eng. Memorial service )
- Funeral service for the departed [149] (obviously, without a permissive prayer "Our Lord Jesus Christ, in His divine grace, and the gift of power ...")
- Parastas [151] ( English Parastas )
- Moleben ( English Moleben, Service of intercession, Service of supplication )
- Consecration of the home [149] ( eng. House blessing )
In divine service, the layman’s order is produced only by a hand censer — the so-called katseey . The prayers that the priest is supposed to utter by the statute are omitted [152] . The cries of the priest ("Blessed be our God ..." and others) are replaced by "For the prayers of our saints, father ..." [153] or "By the prayers of saints, father ...". Instead of " Lord, have mercy . ( thrice ) Bless "the laity reads" Lord, have mercy . ( thrice ) Lord, bless ” [154] . All peaceful / pleading, especial and minor litany are replaced by “ Lord, have mercy ” 12, 40 and 3 times, respectively [155] , for deacon petitions on lithium 40, 30 and 50 times [152] , with the addition “ Glory and Now ”In the end, priestly cries — by the prayer of Jesus [143] in the plural form:“ Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us. ” All are prokimnyh , "God the Lord ...", "Holy is the Lord God ...", "Glory to the Light that showed us ..." - all this is preserved, since it is prescribed in the Typicon to announce them to the reader [143] .
For those who for one reason or another could not take part in the cathedral service, and also when it is impossible to keep all specialized service books at home, or simply because of the ignorance of the worshiper, in the old rite there are instructions to replace the church service ( night , morning , morning , clocks with and without pochasiya , vespers ) [156] [157] [158] prayers ( Jesus , the Virgin and the Holy), or bows, or the psalter — although this, generally speaking, is not called lay order. If there is no temple in the vicinity or there is no opportunity to go to church, you should pray twice a day with the rite of “Dvanad Psalms” the temple - this Chin was brought from the Holy Mountain by Rev. Dosifei, Archimandrite of Kiev-Pechersk.
Spreading the lay rank
In modern times at the highest level in the Russian Orthodox Church, the need for a wider distribution of the lay rank is realized, but any final decision has not yet been worked out, although the issue is raised sporadically. Thus, in the final document of the 4th Congress of Diocesan Orthodox Missionaries (2010), the possibility was mentioned for the lay people to conduct the daily circle:
In those parishes in which, for one reason or another, it is impossible to perform a divine service headed by a priest, liturgical life often stops. Participants propose to prepare a set of recommendations for the performance of lay worship (with their subsequent approval at the church level), designed to help literate lay people in the conduct of worship at their parishes [8] .
At the Bishops' Council of 2011, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill noted:
The question of where to get clergy for more than now, the number of churches is natural ... And if there is a responsible person from local residents who can perform services that do not require the indispensable participation of a clergyman: reading pictorial, canon, vespers or matins, with the omission of prayers, pronounced by the priest, this will undoubtedly be spiritual support for people who are unable to attend the temple, which is located away from the place of residence. This is especially important in those regions, in particular, in the Far East, where sectarians are active [162] .
Commenting on the Patriarch ’s proposal, the rector of St. Nicholas Church in Bersenevka, Hegumen Kirill (Sakharov) said:
Really, finally, did these words sound? Long-awaited words. Somewhere in the late 90s, I submitted to Vladyka Sergius , the current Metropolitan of Voronezh and Borisoglebsky , and then to the manager of the affairs of the Moscow Patriarchate, a memo in which I proposed the same thing. Vladyka said that he handed this note to the Synod for consideration. Then no decision was made on the proposals that were contained in my note ... How does the church life of the residents of dozens of localities who do not have a temple, a house of worship, a chapel, or a cross worshiped? Almost nothing. Well, they can watch the broadcast on television at Christmas and Easter, someone has the opportunity to “see”, but there is no proper church life. That is sad. And the years go by [155] .
Several more years passed from that moment, and so far no progress has been observed in this matter, while layman enthusiasts continue to show themselves as if from a “bottom” movement.
For understandable reasons, the mundane rank is in use among non-canonical jurisdictions , sects, and marginal groups [163] [164] [165] [166] [167] [168] , which have made great progress in popularizing it.
