The Great King ( German: Der große König ) is a German propaganda monumental film directed by Veit Harlan in 1942. Filmed by order of Joseph Goebbels with the aim of psychological support for the population of the Third Reich during the Second World War .

Content
Story
During the battle of Kunersdorf in 1759, the attack of the Prussian army drowned due to the numerical superiority of the Austrians. To the disappointment of King Frederick II , his army flees from the Austrians. After the battle, only three thousand soldiers remained in the 48-thousand-strong Prussian army.
Frederick II is in a desperate situation and is considering suicide . Prussian generals try to convince the king to declare surrender, but the king pulls himself together and collects a new army.
At the same time, sergeant major Treskov met with the miller's daughter Louise, caring for wounded soldiers. They fall in love with each other and dream of a wedding. Frederick II leads the army in Torgau , where he defeats the Austrians . In the battle, the sergeant-major Treskov, who recently married Louise, dies.

The painting received the Mussolini Cup for best foreign film at the 10th Venice Film Festival of 1942.
