Mila i Fontanals, Manuel

Manuel Mila i Fontanals ( Cat. Manuel Milà i Fontanals ; May 4, 1818 , Villafranca del Penedès - July 16, 1882 , Barcelona ) - Catalan literary critic, writer and philologist, one of the active participants in the movement for the revival of Catalan culture in the second half of the XIX century.

Life and work

He received his primary education in Barcelona, ​​then - between 1838 and 1844 - he studied in Paris. Returning to Catalonia, in 1845 M. Mila became a professor of philosophy and literature at the University of Barcelona. In 1858, the scientist was admitted to the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts, Sant Jordi.

Manuel Mila y Fontanals made a great contribution to the study of Catalan medieval literature and the Catalan language. He was involved in the unification of the spelling of the Catalan language, proposing in 1861 definitions for its two main branches - West Catalan and East Catalan. He also wrote a number of scientific works on literary topics, including:

  • De los trovadores en España (1861) - on the poetry of Spanish troubadours
  • De la poesia heroico-popular castellana (1874) - about the medieval heroic poetry of Castile
  • Resenya històrica i crítica dels antics poetes catalans - about medieval catalan poetry
  • Principios de Estética (1857-1869) - on issues of artistic aesthetics
  • Romancerillo Catalán (1882) - about the Catalan romancero

In 1886-1896, after the scientist’s death, a complete collection of his works in 8 volumes ( Obras Completas de D. Manuel Milá y Fontanals ) was published in Barcelona.
