Plasticine ( Italian plastilina , from other Greek. Πλαστός - stucco) is a material for modeling . Previously made from refined and crushed clay powder with the addition of wax , animal fats and other substances that prevent drying. At present, plasticine production also uses high molecular weight polyethylene (VMPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), rubbers and other high-tech materials. It is painted in various colors. Serves to perform figures of sketches for sculptural works, small models , works of small forms.

Composition and properties of plasticine

For medal work, the most acceptable is solid clay of brand T, which consists of kaolin (white clay) (grade R-1-C) - 46.5%, petrolatum (grade PS) - 32%, paraffin (grade T) - 8%, zinc oxide (grade M-1) −4.8%, pine rosin (grade A) - 4.5%, engine oil (grade 45) - 3.97%, gas soot - 0.23%, which gives plasticine a gray color , gas soot can be replaced by chromium oxide to obtain a greenish color (the mass content of plasticine components is given in percent). Sulfur may be added to plasticine to give the highest hardness.

Another type of plasticine is soft (grade M), consists of the following components: kaolin (grade R-1-C) - 49.9%, petrolatum (grade PS) - 38.7%, paraffin (grade T) - 4.9 %, machine oil (grade 45) - 4.9%, pine rosin (grade A) - 1.067%, chromium oxide - 0.5%, gas soot - 0.039%. It may be suitable for medal work after adding zinc oxide, which are not included in this plasticine.

In addition to clay, modern modalists for modeling use a wax composition that is used for precision casting of bronze and cast iron according to the lost wax model. This wax composition consists of 30% beeswax, 35% paraffin and 35% stearin. In addition, sometimes medalists work with refractory clay, which is then burned.

Clever Plasticine

Clever plasticine, or, as it is also called, handgum (literally - manual chewing gum, Eng.) Is a substance based on silicone, reminds chewing gum to the touch, but has interesting properties of thixotropic fluids . Due to this, it flows, breaks, breaks, etc. Due to other components, it can still magnetize, glow, change color. The tar has similar properties at relatively low temperatures.
