Biography
Born on January 1, 1919 in a Muslim family of Turkish-Egyptian descent. His father, Mohammed Abd al-Quddus, an actor in theater and cinema, wanted his son to become a lawyer. In 1942, he graduated from the law faculty of Cairo University , and then worked as a lawyer.
Since 1944, he began to write screenplays, short stories and novels. Over time, having decided to focus on the career of a writer, he left the practice of law. Soon he became a leading journalist of the newspaper al-Akhbar , which he then headed in 1971-1975. In 1975-1976, the chief editor of the newspaper al-Ahram . Until 1960, the owner, and since 1960, the editor-in-chief of the socio-political weekly Roz al-Yousef [1] , founded by his mother Fatima al-Yousef, a film actress known as Rosa. He often criticized important people, including presidents, and was arrested three times in his journalistic career.
He died in Cairo on January 12, 1990 from the consequences of a stroke.
Creativity
Abd al-Quddus has written over 60 novels and storybooks. 49 of his novels were filmed, ten films were shot each. The film versions of three of his works - “The Man in Our House ” [2] ( 1961 ), “Black Glasses” [3] ( 1963 ), “The Honor of My Wife” [4] ( 1967 ) - went with different success at the Soviet box office.
He was prone to melodramatism and sexually-loving themes, some of the subjects he borrowed from Western European writers [1] .
Some of his stories were translated into Russian and included in collections of works by Egyptian writers:
- Swimsuit for the daughter of the master Mahmoud, in Sat. “Live, Egypt!”, M., 1973 .
- A bus was stolen in the collection “Career of Doctor Fanus”, M., 1977
- The last mistake, in the collection "Career of Dr. Fanus", M., 1977
Prizes and Awards
- He was awarded the Order of Merit by President Nasser .
- He received his first literary prize in 1973 for the novel “My Blood, My Tears, My Smile”
- In 1975 he received the prize “Best Screenplay” for the novel “The Bullet is Still in My Pocket” (the 1974 film was also shown at the Soviet box office [5] )
- In 1990 , he was posthumously awarded the Order of the Republic
