Appearances

In Resident Evil

Chris Redfield first appears as one of the two game characters in the original Resident Evil game, along with Jill Valentine , team mate Rebecca Chambers , a newcomer to STARS. Chris was introduced as a former US Army military pilot [10] and a member of the Alpha Squad of the STARS Special Police Unit at the Raccoon City Police Department. In the story, after a helicopter with another detachment, Bravo, went missing in a nearby forest, Alpha set off to investigate its disappearance.

Chris, accompanied by Albert Wesker , Barry Burton and Jill Valentine , soon find themselves trapped in a nearby mansion, filled with terrible monsters and deadly traps. In the end, Chris and his comrades find out how this nightmare began and witness the death of Albert Wesker, who betrayed all of them. They also collide and kill the Tyrant prototype released by Wesker. After the so-called “Incident at the Mansion” ( Eng. Mansion Incident ), Chris leaves Raccoon City and begins work against the Umbrella Corporation. [9]

Chris returns to Resident Evil Code: Veronica , which takes place five months later. As a protagonist in the second half of the game, he is trying to save his younger sister, Claire, from the corporation's research centers located on Rockfort Island and Antarctica . Having discovered that his sister is in Antarctica, Chris briefly intersects with Wesker, who is eager to take revenge on Chris for destroying his plans. In the end, he encounters Alexia Ashford, the creator of the T-Veronica virus. In the finale, he fights with Wesker, immediately after the murder of Alexia. He is not suitable for Wesker at this stage and their struggle breaks off due to the inevitable destruction of the base. But both promise to finish the job another time. [9] [11]

Chris appears as one of the main characters in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles , [12] where he reunites with Jill Valentine. Parts of this game are a very inaccurate retelling of the events of the Resident Evil series. And the new chapter in the game talks about how Jill and Chris, members of the "secret unit to contain biological threats," embarked on a mission to destroy Umbrella - after rumors of the new ones being developed by B. O. O. ” The events of the chapter develop in 2003 in Russia, at one of the Caucasian objects of Umbrella. [9]

Chris became a protagonist in Resident Evil 5 , [13] , in which he is an operative and one of the founders of the BSAA paramilitary group at the UN (abbreviated BSAA from the English Bio-terrorism Security Assessment Alliance ). According to the plot of the game, Chris investigates the terrorist threat in the African region of Kijuju ( English Kijuju ) and finds his old partner and friend Jill, who disappeared and was considered dead. Together with him, his new partner Sheva Alomar . In the end, they managed to find and free Jill and finally defeat and destroy Wesker, who planned to release a new virus into the atmosphere, which would lead to the end of mankind.

Chris appears in Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles as a game character at the end of the Game of Oblivion scenario. The script is a retelling of Code: Veronica events. [14] It is also available in Extreme Battle mode, included in later versions of Resident Evil 2 (editions for the PlayStation 2 Dual Shock and PC , as well as ports for Dreamcast and GameCube ), [15] and is also available as one of eight game characters in Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D . [16] The character, along with Jill Valentine, also participates in Resident Evil: Revelations . [17] He is also present in Resident Evil 6 .

Chris picks up the protagonist Resident Evil VII by helicopter at the end of the game.

In other video games

Outside of the Resident Evil series, Chris participates as a game character in a Marvel vs. fighting game . Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds . The first game trailer showed him fighting against the Hulk . [18] It is stated that he will appear in the tactical role-playing game Project X Zone . [nineteen]

In other media

Wentworth Miller played Chris in the movie Resident Evil in 3D: Life After Death . Miller was preparing for the role, finding images of Chris on the Internet. The actor was also shown videos from a series of games. [20]

In George Romero's rejected Resident Evil movie, Chris is introduced as a Native American and one of the few survivors. [21]

The character appears in the fourth franchise feature film, Life After Death . The role was played by actor Wentworth Miller . [5] According to the plot of the film, Chris is imprisoned in a maximum security prison, after an attempt by his unit to take control of the spread of the T-virus in Los Angeles . The survivors who found him believe that he is a prisoner. He meets his sister Claire, who cannot remember him due to a memory loss caused by Umbrella's manipulator. He, Alice, and Claire eventually defeat Albert Wesker and save the surviving prisoners used for Umbrella’s experiments.

In the release of the original Sega Saturn game (Japanese version), Capcom published the True Story Behind Biohazard ad collection containing an original short story called Biohazard: The Beginning . This story describes the events in the character's life before the first game. For example, describes the death of Chris's parents in a car accident and his service in the US Air Force . Redfield joined the U.S. Air Force as a teenager, quickly became an experienced pilot and the best shooter, but in the mid-1990s he was sacked for disobeying a direct order. Subsequently, he becomes a drifter , until he was attracted, on Burton's recommendation, to the STARS affiliate in Raccoon City. [9]

Chris Redfield also appears in several Resident Evil comic books published by WildStorm , Image Comics and Marvel Comics . [22]

In Products

In 1998, Toy Biz introduced a double set of action figures with Chris and the monster Cerberus, included in the line "Resident Evil Series 1". [23] Another action figure (from Moby Dick) from the original game appeared in 2002. [23] In the same year, Palisades Toys introduced two figures (differing only in color) of Chris from Code: Veronica . [23] In 2006, another character figure appeared, presented by NECA as part of the Resident Evil Anniversary Series 1 jubilee series. [23] And in 2009, Hot Toys showed the action figure of a character from Resident Evil 5 . [23] Diorama figures were also produced. So, in 2008, Organic in the series "Bio Hazard Figure Collection Vol.4" presented the figure of Chris, standing in front of a giant snake (monster "Yawn"). Both characters were taken from a remake of the first part. [23] In addition, Gaya Entertainment released in 2009 her figure of Chris (in the guise of a remake). [24]

Abilities and Skills

In the original Resident Evil, Chris’s script is more complex than Jill’s. For example, Chris can take fewer items (smaller inventory) with him and he does not have some items. He is not equipped with a master key, and therefore he must look for small keys. Chris, on the other hand, has more health than Jill. [25]

Reviews and criticism

The character received mixed ratings and reviews from critics. So, in 2009, GameZone put the character 4th on his list of the top 5 “game gods of the year” for his new appearance (according to PSU.com , “now it's a tough, muscular warrior with biceps the size of a watermelon” [9] ), calling his “one magnificent hunk” with “a breathtaking body and gorgeous appearance.” [26] In the same year, Chris Redfield and his sister Claire were added by IGN to the “Ultimate Zombie Strike Team”, to Chris for his “long, fruitful work to destroy zombies, "which" proves that even the formidable bio-weapon of Umbrella is no match for the lone brave warrior. " [27]

Gameplanet in 2009 noted that the appearance of Chris and Leon S. Kennedy in the next game would be “surprising,” adding that they are both the protagonists of the series. [28] And IGN has repeatedly compared Chris with Leon, both of which were seen as the protagonists of the series. [29] [30] In 2010, the GamesRadar resource included it, along with teammate Sheva, in an article on "the most fierce twin battles in games" for their battles in Resident Evil 5 . [31]

There is also a number of negative reviews among critics. Chris took fifth place in 2009 on the IGN's list of “most overrated characters in video games,” suggesting that he should “focus on work, not steroids,” [32] he was also included on UGO.com ’s list in 2010 "A dozen unlucky game characters," for his failures throughout the series. [33] GameSpy called its new look (in Resident Evil 5 ) as "a cross between Colin Farrell and Hugh Jackman ." [34] This appearance caused a lot of controversy and was often ridiculed. GameSpot even gave Chris a special prize - as “a character who is likely to fail a drug test” at the Dubious Honors awards in 2009, adding that this “person is like a walking pharmacy.” [35]

Including him for his inability to shoot when moving in RE5 to the list of “Ten Heroes of the Game that Fail on Simple Things,” GameDaily recommended the character “spend a little more time on the dash and a little less time on pumping iron in front of the mirror.” [36 ] Joystiq noted that perhaps during the Umbrella Chronicles, Chris began his “abuse of steroids,” [37] which was also voiced by IGN. [32] In 2011, BeefJack listed Chris among the five playable characters who should be sexy but clumsy because “he looks second in the doubles contest for Popeye the Sailor .” [38] But when GamesRadar compared his looks in Code Veronica and RE5 , trying to assess which would be more appropriate for a zombie apocalypse, they found that the latter would give a better chance of survival in a zombie attack, [39] also evaluating Chris from the original game with the phrase “terribly poorly prepared”. [40]

In 2009, GameTrailers made a video with an emphasis on character development throughout the series. [41] A Game Informer began to study the importance of Chris Redfield's personality. [42]

The name was used by early Christians as a metaphor expressing how they carried Christ in their hearts. „Christopher“ is never acknowledged within the games however. Redfield, on the other hand, is a bit redundant. It derives from two words, the Olde English ryd meaning 'a cleared area suitable for agriculture,' and field , another old word meaning 'area cleared for agriculture.' Chris Redfield's full name could be literally taken to mean to carry across fields of fields - symbolic perhaps for all the backtracking he did in the early entries in the Resident Evil series. ”
