Biography
In 1835, he was a doctor of medicine, in 1843 he was appointed professor of microscopic anatomy and botany in Utrecht , in 1857 he occupied the department of zoology and comparative anatomy, in 1881 he retired. His scientific works relate mainly to the structure and technique of the microscope and general issues concerning both the animal and plant kingdoms.

Together with Logemann and Lubach, Harting published Album der Natuur ( Haarlem , 1853–58).
Eponyms
A species of squid is named after him Architeuthis hartingii .
