In each of the countries of the Commonwealth, the medal has its own specific place in the national award system.

History

Until 1977, there was already a practice of making coronation medals and medals of anniversaries of the accession to the throne of previous British monarchs. The only thing the UK Government was to do was to determine the number of medals that each of the Commonwealth countries received. The decision about who will be encouraged by this medal was made already at the level of national governments.

Thus, the medal was minted at the royal mint in the amount of:

  • 30,000 for the UK
  • 1507 for New Zealand
  • 6870 for Australia
  • 30000 for Canada

The medal is worn on the left side of the chest

Description

Queen Elizabeth II’s silver anniversary medal is made of silver and has a circle shape with a diameter of 32 mm. In the center is the crown profile of Queen Elizabeth II crowned by the crown of St. Edward , with the inscription around it: “ELIZABETH II DEI GRA. REGINA FID. DEF. ” (Short for Latin“ Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith ”)

On the reverse of the medal there is a six-line inscription “THE 25th YEAR OF THE REIGN OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II 6 FEBRUARY 1977” ( 25 years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II on February 6, 1977 ) in a laurel wreath with a crown on top.

The Canadian version of the medal is identical, except that the medal was slightly thicker, the crown on the queen's profile was more direct, and the reverse contained a stylized image of a maple leaf, at the base of which was a royal monogram.

The ribbon of the medal is moire white with red stripes at the edges and in the center, 1 mm wide. Blue strips 7 mm wide are adjacent to the central strip on the sides.
