Biography
In 1680 he became a monk of the Order of the Minims . On the first occasion, he set off on a journey with the goal of scientific research. Near Tunisia fell into the hands of robbers and was robbed. The next two trips, to South America and the West Indies, in 1703-1706 and 1707-1710, were made by him at the expense of the French government. During these trips, he made magnetic and meteorological observations, observed a total solar eclipse on November 16, 1706, and determined the geographical location of so many places.
In 1724, Fellier went on a new trip to the Canary Islands on behalf of the Paris Academy , to compare the first meridian passing through the islands with the Paris meridian. Through diligently performed triangulations, timing, observation of the eclipses of the moons of Jupiter and other things, Fellier determined the difference in longitude between Paris and the Tenerife peak at 18 ° 52 '3 ", as well as between Paris and the west coast of the island of Ferro at 20 ° 1' 45". In his geodesic works, Fellier was the first to use the moon's distances to determine longitude. He also owns the invention and the first device of a hydrometer with constant volume and an indication of a very inaccurate, however, method of calculating the heights of mountains using observations of a barometer.
In 1711, Fellier received the position of director of the Marseille Astronomical Observatory, which he then held until the end of his life.
