Geographical position
The city is located in the southwestern part of the governorate, in the foothills of the western Zagros , at an altitude of 254 meters above sea level [2] .
Mahmur is located approximately 55 kilometers southwest of Erbil , the provincial capital, and 272 kilometers north-northwest (NNW) of Baghdad , the country's capital.

Economics
The basis of the city’s economy is agriculture and animal husbandry . In the vicinity of Mahmur, wheat and barley are cultivated.
