Freeling joined Warner Brothers Studios as a leading animator in 1930, before working for Walt Disney Studios and the United Film Ad Service , where he began his career. Already in 1933, he became the chief director of the Warner Bros. studio unit . Cartoons also developed the technique of synchronizing the movement of cartoon characters with music for the cartoon series Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies.
For these series of cartoons, which were originally developed for the studio’s music portfolio, he created or reworked a number of characters, many of which later became the main characters of these cartoons: Bugs Bunny , Porky Pig , Yosemite Sam , Cat Sylvester , Tweety , Speedy Gonzalez . He won four Oscars for the best animated short film while working at Warner Brothers, and during the period of his work he created more cartoons than any other director, 266.
In 1963, when Warner Brothers closed the cartoon division, he and his partner De Paty founded DePatie-Freleng Enterprises , which produced and directed television and theater cartoons and short films. He created the image of the Pink Panther for the animated captions for the film “ Pink Panther ”, and then used the character for a series of cartoons produced by his studio. He won his fifth Academy Award for the first cartoon in the series, The Pink Phink (1964), and continued to produce Pink Panther cartoons until his retirement in 1981.
