Biography
Born in the city of Terni in the Umbria region , Kingdom of Italy [1] .
The commander of the tank platoon of the 4th tank regiment, junior lieutenant Salvatore Morikoni, distinguished himself in the Aragon operation during the Spanish Civil War . He died in battle on the highway to the city of Chert . Posthumously awarded the gold medal "For Military Valor . "
From the presentation to the award [1] :
The commander of a tank platoon, impudent, courageous and decisive, even in the most difficult trials, always the first in the most risky cases, has already managed to distinguish himself in all military operations on the Aragon front. In the battle on the way to Hell heroically he gave his young life, providing protection for a badly battered formation and evacuation of the dead and wounded on his tank. Repeatedly wounded, did not leave the battlefield, with high faith and a generous spirit of self-sacrifice, until he fell slain in the head.
Highway to Hell , April 8, 1938.
