Sumayil [1] ( Arabic. سميل , Kurdish Sêmêl , sir. ܣܡܠܐ ) is a city in northern Iraq located in the Dahuk governorate ( Iraqi Kurdistan autonomy).

Geographical position
The city is located in the southwestern part of the governorate, in the mountains, at an altitude of 444 meters above sea level [2] .
Sumayil is located approximately 10 kilometers west of Dahuk , the provincial capital and 408 kilometers north-northwest (NNW) of Baghdad , the country's capital.
Population
In 2012, the population of the city is 58,826 people [3] [4] .
History
At the beginning of the XX century, Sumail was a small village, the main population of which were Kurds . The Assyrian community formed in Sumayil from refugees fleeing the massacre in the Ottoman Empire .
The Sumayil Massacre
In 1933, Assyrian Christians were massacred in the city by armed groups of the government of the Kingdom of Iraq . As a result, more than 3,000 people died.
