Biography
Steinhoff studied medicine in Leipzig , but interrupted his studies, deciding to become an actor. His debut on the stage took place in Braunschweig in the mobile theater "At the bottom". He worked as a theater actor and singer in Munich and shortly before the outbreak of World War I, he was promoted to senior director at the Metropol Theater in Berlin. Since 1914, Steinhoff worked as a director in Viennese variety shows .
In 1921, Steinhoff made his first film based on the story by Gottfried Keller, "Dress makes people . " In 1921-1933, Steinhoff made several films in different genres - comedy, film adaptation, melodrama. Steinhoff worked with screenwriter and later filmmaker Billy Wilder .
Steinhoff sympathized with the National Socialists before they came to power and enjoyed their constant patronage. For his film “Quex from the Hitler Youth” (1933), based on the novel of the same name by Karl Alois Schönzinger, Steinhoff was awarded the Hitler Youth gold badge of honor. The tape received unconditional support from the Nazi leadership.
In 1941, Steinhoff made the film , dedicated to the events of the Boer War , the identity of Paul Kruger and other South African politicians of that period. The film was awarded the Mussolini Cup for best foreign film at the 9th 1941 Venice Film Festival .
From the filming of his last film , Shiva and the Hanging Flower, Steinhoff first fled from Prague to Berlin and then tried to fly on the last Lufthansa flight to Madrid , but died along with all the passengers and the crew of the aircraft, which was shot down by Soviet troops near Luckenwalde or Glinig in Brandenburg .
