The Tambov Region lies in the southern part of the East European Plain , in the central part of the Oka-Don Plain . Included with the Central Federal District .
In the north it borders with the Ryazan region , in the northeast with the Penza region , in the south-east with the Saratov region , in the south with the Voronezh region , in the west with the Lipetsk region .
The area of the region is 34 462 km ². [one]
The population as of 2010 is 1,092,396 inhabitants [2] . The average population density is 31.7 people / km².
Relief
The region occupies the central part of the Oka-Don (Tambov) Plain (altitude up to 219 m). The relief is gently undulating, dissected by beams and ravines.
Minerals
- The Tsentralnoye deposit - 887 million m³ of ilmenite - rutile - zirconium sand with 4% metal content and, possibly, industrial gold content near the village of Nikolskoe, Rasskazovsky region .
- Phosphorites , building materials , mineral paints, peat . The most famous sand deposits are Tambov, Polkovskoye.
Hydrography
About 1,400 rivers, rivers and streams flow through the region. The most significant rivers are the Tsna ( Volga basin), Vorona , Bityug , Voronezh and Savala ( Don basin). Water resources also include about 900 ponds and reservoirs with a total water volume of 534.5 million m³.
Ecosystem
Tambov region is located in the forest-steppe zone.
Soils - typical chernozem thick, in the south - leached, in the north - gray forest soils. On the valleys and beams - meadow-chernozem and peat-marsh.
Forests (the main species - pine , oak , maple , linden , ash , birch , aspen ) occupy about 10% of the territory.
The hare , fox , polecats , rodents have survived.
On the territory of the Tambov region is Voroninsky reserve .
