Biography
Eduard Iosifovich Sarukhanyan was born on June 24, 1940 in the city of Novorossiysk of the Krasnodar Territory.
In 1957, E. I. Sarukhanyan entered the Arctic faculty of the Leningrad Higher Marine Engineering College (LVIMU) named after Admiral S. O. Makarov, graduating with honors in 1962 with a degree in oceanography. By distribution, E. I. Sarukhanyan was sent to work as a junior research fellow in the Arctic research laboratory in the village. Tiksi of the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
In 1965, Eduard Iosifovich entered graduate school at the Department of Marine Hydrology , Leningrad State University of Management, and graduated in December 1967. In January 1968, E. I. Sarukhanyan defended his thesis for the degree of Candidate of Geographical Sciences on the topic “Pole tide in the oceans”, prepared under the guidance of Professor I. V. Maksimov.
From December 1967 to August 1969, E. I. Sarukhanyan worked as a junior research fellow at the Institute of Inland Water Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in the village. Borok of the Yaroslavl region . One of the results of this work was a monograph written by him together with N.P. Smirnov, devoted to the study of the causes of the long-term variability of the Volga runoff.
Since September 1969, the work of E.I. Sarukhanyan has been associated with the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) in Leningrad.
In the period from November 1969 to October 1970, E. I. Sarukhanyan took part in the drift of the first shift of the Komsomol-youth station “North Pole-19” The history of the drift “SP-19” is set out in the book of A. N. Chilingarov, M P. Evseev and E. I. Sarukhanyan “Under the feet of an ice island”, which has withstood today three editions.
Between 1975 and 1979 E. I. Sarukhanyan was the head of three marine expeditions in the Southern Ocean and in the North European basin under the program of the Polar Experiment (POLEX). In 1974-1975 He led the POLEX-South-75 expedition in the Drake Strait , in 1976 he was deputy director of the POLEX-North-76 national experiment in the North European Basin, and in 1978-1979. He led the POLEX-South-79 expedition in the Southern Ocean between Africa and Antarctica. According to the results of original experimental and theoretical studies of the structure and variability of the Antarctic circumpolar current, E. I. Sarukhanyan published a monograph, also published abroad in English, and defended his doctoral dissertation in 1981 on the topic “Large-scale dynamics of the waters of the Southern Ocean”.
Since April 1981, Eduard Iosifovich headed the department of the AARI Polar Experiment, which became one of the leading scientific divisions of the institute.
E. I. Sarukhanyan stood at the origins of modern international cooperation in the study of the Southern Ocean, being in 1981-1982. the head of the Russian-American expedition to the Weddell Sea aboard the R / V Mikhail Somov.
In addition, he performed a series of studies in the field of planetary geophysics, in particular, in the study of long-period cosmo-geophysical effects on hydrometeorological processes.
From 1984 to 2011 Eduard Iosifovich Sarukhanyan worked at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), where he headed the observation department, and then headed the department of the World Weather Watch. In recent years, thanks to his experience in organizing major observing programs, he has been the Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of WMO for the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008 and a member of the Joint IPY Committee.
E. I. Sarukhanyan is the author and co-author of more than 150 scientific works, including eight monographs and four popular science books. Sarukhanyan’s book “Igor Maximov” is dedicated to the vivid research activities of the outstanding geophysicist Prof. I. V. Maximov and his scientific school. In the book “My Polar Years” he describes the extraordinary adventures that he experienced with friends at the drifting station “SP-19” and expeditions to the Southern Ocean. Both books went out of print at the GeoGraf Publishing House and enjoy wide readership.
For his contribution to the study of the polar regions of the planet, E. I. Sarukhanyan was awarded the Order of Honor in 1981. In 2008, he was awarded the title of Honored Meteorologist of the Russian Federation.
