Creativity
The main theme of the artist’s works is the life of a metropolis, the coexistence and relationships of a huge number of people, houses, various things and plants. His works are characterized by fragmented perception and theatricality of composition. Everyday scenes and everyday life in the artist’s paintings become entertaining beautiful or sublime, and objects, at times, change places with people, becoming the main characters.
The artist in the plot canvases and, of course, portraits shows his characters as close to the audience as possible. It seems that he is more interested in the pictorial possibilities of modern materials and the image of minor details. But seemingly random, these details from life are then generalized into recognizable artistic and allegorical images. Least of all, the artist depicts on the canvas something peeped in life. Rather, everything happens quite the opposite - at first the scene is invented, the arrangement of the figures, and only then the models that the artist wants to portray in a particular scene are searched for.
“Writing a picture, in my understanding, is like creating a film, when the plot is first born, the actors are selected. And then on the plane of the canvas are people and things, similar and completely opposite characters. " S.O. Belov.
According to the book “Sergey Belov”, publishing house “White City”, 2012, the artist’s work can be divided into the following series:
Habitat Series
Pictures from this series tell about the city through the city itself and its inhabitants. “In every country, in every culture, there are certain symbols that have developed over many centuries. But besides the generally accepted symbols, each person has his own, his own, connected with personal feelings and life experience. When out of a large number of different details surrounding us, only a few are selected for the image on the canvas, it is they who become symbols. Of course, the choice of these details is not accidental, even if it happens intuitively. Reflected house, newspaper headline, key, pin and a handful of nails - all together they can tell the whole story on canvas. It’s not necessary that everyone will read it unambiguously, because again, each beholder has his own ideas about symbolism. ” S. O. Belov
City Road Series
This series brings together works that one way or another talk about roads: city roads along which people rush in different directions and about life paths and destinies that people cross or lead them on different roads.
The Presentiment of Color Series
A series of graphics in which Sergey Belov builds an unusual series of household items, plants, animals, where a person is present only indirectly. “Graphics is a huge world, no less interesting or diverse than painting. Pencil drawing for me is both a way of studying the depicted subject, and an opportunity to compose a certain story, and just a break from painting. The schedule is more conventional. You can try to imagine any thought in the form of a rhythm of black and white silhouettes, bring it to a kind of logo. ” S.O. Belov.
Communication Series
A series of works that appeared thanks to Sergey’s overseas travels in Europe and America.
Home Series
Work on the formula of happiness, on family values.
