Arithmetic (Diophantine)

Cover of 1621 edition, translation into Latin by Claude Gaspard Bachet de Meziriac .

Arithmetic is an ancient Greek manuscript on mathematics, created by the mathematician Diophantus in the 3rd century AD. This is a collection of 130 algebraic problems with solutions of certain (having one solution) and indefinite equations.

The equations in the book are now called " Diophantine equations ." The method for solving them is known as Diophantine analysis . Most arithmetic problems lead to quadratic equations.

Reading the translation of Diophantus’s book inspired Pierre Fermat to propose Fermat’s Great Theorem in the margins of his copy of Arithmetic, which states that the equationxn+yn=zn {\ displaystyle x ^ {n} + y ^ {n} = z ^ {n}} x ^ {n} + y ^ {n} = z ^ {n} wherex {\ displaystyle x} x ,y {\ displaystyle y} y ,z {\ displaystyle z} z andn {\ displaystyle n} n - nonzero integers, has no solutions forn {\ displaystyle n} n more than 2.

Arithmetic became known to Muslim mathematicians in the X century [1] , when Abu l-Wafa translated it into Arabic [2] .
