History

In 1437, the Kalmyk Taishi Togon issued a decree on the introduction of the Ulan Hall as a sign of the difference between the Oirats and other Mongols . Ulan Hall became widespread among the Oirats and became a symbolic expression of the Oirats' national self-identification, who began to call themselves “ Ulan Zalata Urd ” (Oirats with a red tassel). In 1750, Khan Donduk-Dashi passed a law confirming the decree of Togon Taisha. The meeting of Kalmyk noyons and zansag prescribed the Kalmyks the obligation to sew Ulan Hall on a hat.

The expression “ Ulan Zalata Urd ” was preserved and passed on to Kalmyks, who began to call themselves in the same way - “ Ulan Zalata Halmgud ” (Kalmyks with a red tassel), putting in these words the meaning of an ethnonym equal to the term “Kalmyk”.

Currently, Ulan Hall, in addition to the element of the men's national headdress, is used as an amulet - it is tied to car antennas, rear-view mirrors, women’s handbags or put on a home altar. The most important element of the modern use of the Lancer Hall is its consecration by Buddhist monks.
