Biography
Lilienthal began his studies at the University of Koenigsberg , where he studied philosophy, languages and history. After studying in Königsberg, Lilienthal made a study tour ( grand tour ), during which he continued his studies at the universities of Wittenberg , Leipzig and Jena and received a master's degree in philosophy. After that, he continued his studies in Rostock , visited Hamburg , Kiel , Lubeck , and Holland , after which, in 1711, he returned to Königsberg. In Königsberg, Lilienthal unsuccessfully tried to take the place of a professor at the Königsberg Academy.
In 1715, Lilienthal became deacon of the Konigsberg Cathedral , in 1719 - deacon of the Altstadt Church , and in 1727 - curator of the Konigsberg City Library.
Lilienthal was an honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (elected October 26, 1733 [1] ) and a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . In addition to works on theology, Lilienthal was the author of numerous works on the history of Koenigsberg and Prussia, including a historical description of the Koenigsberg Cathedral. Lilienthal collected an extensive personal library, which served as the basis for several bibliographies of theology and church history compiled and published by him. Lilienthal also collected an extensive numismatic collection. He was one of the first who began to study numismatics from a scientific (historical) point of view. In 1725, he published a description of his collection of thalers (800 creases). In 1747, Lilienthal issued the most voluminous (the number of coins described increased to 2384), the fourth edition describing his collection of these coins. It became the basis for further study of the history of this coin. In addition, Lilienthal published works on the history of Prussian and Polish coins and medals.
The son of Michael Lilienthal, Theodor Christopher (1717-1782), later became a theologian, professor and rector of the University of Koenigsberg.
