Distribution

Holarctic , Afrotropics , Neotropics [1] [2] [3] . In Europe, 17 species, including Epeolus cruciger (Panzer, 1799) , Epeolus schummeli Schilling, 1848 , Epeolus variegatus ( Linnaeus , 1758) [4] [5] .

Description

Small, slightly pubescent bees, with whitish-yellow markings on the body like those of wasps and reddish-red legs. Length - 5-11 mm. Kleptoparasites of Colletes bees, in whose nests they lay their eggs. Adults appear in June – July and, as a rule, on the same plants as their host bees [6] . Maxillary palps 1-segmented. In females, on the 6th abdominal sternum, there are lanceolate, finely serrated processes. In the front wing there are three radio-medial cells, the 1st of them is much larger than the 3rd. The top of the radial cell (it is elliptical in shape) is removed from the front edge of the wing. Hind tibia with spurs [7] [2] .

Etymology

In 1802, when the genus was first described, the French entomologist Pierre Latraille did not explain the name of the bee genus that he proposed. According to Thomas Onuferko, the author of the generic revision, the name Epeolus comes from the soldier Epei ( dr. Greek Ἐπειός ), who in ancient Greek mythology built the Trojan wooden horse , and that this was inspired by the sinister character of these kleptoparasitic cuckoo bees. A few more names use the same root as their base, for example, Epeoloides Giraud (Osirini), Parepeolus Ducke (Osirini), Protepeolini, Pseudepeolus Holmberg (Epeolini) [2] .
