Story
The film begins with the deaf-blind woman Michelle McNelly coming to the hospital to visit her former teacher, Devrah Sahai, who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease . Further in the picture flashbacks are shown, telling about the history of the relationship of Michelle and Devraja.
Michelle was eighteen months old when, as a result of scarlet fever, she completely lost her sight and hearing. Due to the lack of education by the age of eight, she becomes a rude and uncontrollable child. Desperate parents Michelle Paul and Katherine invite teacher Devraja Sahaya. Sahai suffers from alcoholism and is completely disappointed in life.
Devraj is trying to teach Michelle to read Braille and communicate with other people with the help of a tactile language . He uses harsh and sometimes harsh methods that cause Michel Paul's father to disapprove. Paul orders Sahai to leave, but the teacher secretly stays in the house for 20 days, while Paul is on a business trip. Katherine reluctantly agrees to further studies with her daughter.
For 20 days, Sahai achieves some success in teaching the girl, but cannot achieve the main goal: Michel must understand that each subject has its own name. Paul arrives home, and Devraj is forced to leave the apprentice. Annoyed by her behavior, Sahai throws Michelle into the fountain. Suddenly, she realizes that certain touches to her hand mean “water,” and repeats them with precision. The McNally family decides to leave the teacher in the house.
Many years later, Michelle finishes school for the blind and tries to get a bachelor 's degree in humanities, but is constantly failing. Nevertheless, she is in a good mood and reconciles with her sister Sarah, who, as it turns out, envied Michelle for many years because of her parents' affection for her. After the wedding of Sarah Michelle also thinks about love, and even asks Sahai to kiss her on the lips, which he reluctantly agrees to. After 12 years, Michelle manages to get a bachelor's qualification.
At the same time, Sahai is showing signs of Alzheimer's . When his memory fails, he is put in a psychiatric hospital . Now the teacher and student are changing roles, and Michelle is already teaching Sahai to pronounce the words and understand the world around him.
The finale shows how many people dressed in black carry the coffin to the church. An off-screen voice reads Michelle’s letter addressed to Devraj’s friend Ms. Ner. In the letter, Michelle wrote that the Sahai alphabet, like her own, began with the letters "BLACK" ( Russian TEMONOTA), implying that Devraj was dead.

Creation
The idea of creating the film first appeared in Sanjay Lil Bhansali in 1995 during the filming of the film “ World of Music ” [2] . He was inspired by the autobiography of the deaf-blind American Helen Keller, “The Story of My Life” in which Keller talked about her training with Ann Sullivan . Bhansali visited the Helen Keller Institute, specializing in teaching children with disabilities. Most of the picture is based on his observations of the relationship between students and professors at the institute [3] . The director also read an autobiography of a deaf-mute pianist Geraldine Lohorn [3] .
Initially, Bhansali planned to make a low-budget film in Hindi and English in order to diversify his cinematographic activities after the release of the expensive film “ Devdas ” [3] .
According to the director, from childhood he was an “unbending fan” of Amitabha [2] . He was able to shoot an idol in his film after Bachchan saw Bhansali's picture “ Forever Yours ” and turned to the director with a proposal to participate in any of Bhansali's projects as a leading actor [2] . When Bhansali first approached Rani Mukherjee with a proposal to play Michelle in the film, she doubted for a long time, since she believed that this work would be too complicated for her [2] .
The film was shot in the Indian cities of Shimla and Mumbai . Actors and the film crew experienced a lot of difficulties during the process of creating the picture. The government of India for a long time did not give consent to the shooting, delaying the creation of the film [4] . In February 2004, a fire broke out in Mumbai. Fire damaged the costumes and scenery of the film. Bhansali was forced to re-shoot all the pavilion scenes [5] . During outdoor filming in Shimla, it took snow, and to create a snowy landscape, the director called a team from Mumbai [6] .
During the filming, Mukerjee wore contact lenses to give her eyes a resemblance to the eyes of the blind. She also had to study sign language and Braille for seven months with Amitabh [7] [8] . They were assisted by a group of deaf-blind students who taught actors the sign language, and a deaf-blind young man Zamir Dale, who advised the actors during the filming [9] .
Release
The film "Last Hope" was originally planned to be released on December 10, 2004, but Bhansali decided to postpone the release [10] . The picture was released on February 4, 2005 in 170 cities of India - a fairly small amount compared to most high-budget Bollywood films [11] . The film was part of the program of festivals such as the Casablan Film Festival [12] and the Indian International Film Festival [13] .
At the box office, the picture raised $ 4.7 million, taking eleventh place in the list of the most commercially successful Bollywood films of 2005. This was defined by BoxOffice India.com as an average success [14] .
Criticism
The film received mostly positive reviews from critics. In professional reviews, the game of Bachchan and Mukherjee was highly praised [15] [16] .
Leading film critic of Time magazine , Richard Corliss, ranked “Last Hope” among the best films of 2005, putting her in fifth place [17] .
The film won first place on the Indiatimes list of “25 Bollywood Films to Watch” [18] .
Soundtrack
A. R. Rahman was originally supposed to write music for the film, but he refused because of tight schedules [19] . The soundtrack composed by Monty Sharma. Unlike most Bollywood movies, The Last Hope soundtrack consists of only one song, Haan maine chookar dekha hain, performed by Gayatri Ayer [20] [21] .
