Biography
Jesuit monk, 34, served as confessor to King Louis XIV ; was a supporter of Madame de Maintenon . In church affairs, Louis XIV showed him unlimited trust, which Lachaise used for the benefit of his order ; Protestants called him the main culprit in repealing the edict of Nantes ; Jansenists considered him the enemy of their views; in a dispute between Fenelon and Bossuet, Lachaise found sympathy for the first.
In 1705, the king presented Lachaise near Paris with the estate of Mont-Louis, which later turned into Pere-Lachaise cemetery .
Already aged, the monk several times asked his ward to release him from service, receiving a positive response only in the year of his death. In his place, the royal confessor was appointed another Jesuit - Letelier (1643-1719).
Proceedings
After Lachaise, works on philosophy , theology, and numismatics remained.
