Biography
Ekaterina Nikolaevna Schelkanova was born on May 2, 1970 in Leningrad , USSR . After graduating from the Academy of Russian Ballet named after A. Ya. Vaganova in 1988, where she studied with Lyudmila Safronova , she was invited to join the Kirov (Mariinsky) theater troupe , where she performed many solo parts. While still a student of the Academy. A. Ya. Vaganova, Shchelkanova became one of the first Russian performers of choreography by George Balanchine on the stage of the Opera and Ballet Theater. SM Kirov, now the Mariinsky Theater. During a tour of the United States in 1992, Schelkanova left the troupe. [one]
“It so happened that the Kirov Theater was not for me the way I had imagined it since childhood; no relationship with the teacher and the artistic director. While touring in the USA in the ninety-second year, I decided to leave the theater. The country didn’t really hit me, I admit, I don’t think that a person from St. Petersburg can be hit with anything, but at that moment America was the way out for me ” [2]
The first time she earned in New York was by distributing advertising on the street for $ 4 per hour. Some time later, I met Mikhail Baryshnikov there. He looked at how Catherine was dancing and, having learned that she had no job, gave her the phone number of the American Ballet Theater - this is one of the best companies in the world and the best in America. I called, she was accepted, and pretty soon Catherine became a soloist there. [3]

In 2001, Catherine repeatedly acted as the model and person for the season of the fashion house Salvatore Ferragamo , Italy .
In 2002, Schelkanova starred in Rob Marshall 's musical " Chicago " as the Hungarian Catalina Helinski. For this role, Catherine was awarded the United States Film Actors Guild Award for the best cast in feature films, along with her colleagues in the film, making her the first Russian actress to be awarded this prize.
