History
On June 27, 1922, the Holy See established the apostolic prefecture of Bunia, separating it from the apostolic vicar of Kisangani (now the archdiocese of Kisangani ).
On December 11, 1933, the apostolic prefecture of Bunia was transformed into an apostolic vicar .
On November 10, 1959, the Apostolic Vicariate of Bunia was transformed into the diocese by the bull Cum parvulum of Pope John XXIII .
