NBA season 1949/50 - became the 4th season of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the first when the league became so officially called. The champion of the association was the Minneapolis Lakers team. In the final, the Lakers defeated the Syracuse Nationals team in six games.

In the 1949 BAA Draft, Providence Steamrollers club number one light forward Howie Shannon of the University of Kansas was selected. Alex Groza was chosen under the 2nd number on that draft, Dick McGuire under the 7th number, Frank Saul under the 10th number, and Ralph Beard under the 12th number. Ed Macaulie and Vern Mikkelsen were selected in the territorial draft .
Significant Events of the Season
- 6 teams ( Syracuse Nationals , Three Citys Blackhawks , Anderson Packers , Sheboygan Red Skins , Waterlox Hawks and Denver Nuggets ) moved from the National Basketball League (NBL) to the Basketball Association of America (BAA) , Providence Stimrollers club instead of existence, Jets appeared Indianapolis Olympians . As a result of the association, it became known as the National Basketball Association (NBA) .
- As a result of the increase in the number of tournament participants, in the regular season the teams were divided into three divisions, and not into two, as in the past.
