Biography

Scientific activity

In 1937 he graduated from the Faculty of Biology of Szeged University . From 1945 he was a professor at this university (from 1939-1940 he was a research associate in the D. Cailin Laboratory at the Molteno Institute, Cambridge, UK .

In 1949 he was appointed director of the Biochemical Institute of Semmelweis University . From 1960 to 1967 He was also secretary of the Department of Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the Hungarian People's Republic.

In 1967-1973 and in 1985-1988. - Vice President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. From 1969 to 1971 He was a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In 1971 he was appointed director of the newly created Institute of Biochemistry of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 1970-1978 headed the biological center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Szeged. In 1979 he became director of the Institute of Enzymology.

The main scientific works are devoted to the study of muscle function, cellular respiration and protein synthesis. For the first time isolated lactic dehydrogenase in muscle in its pure form and studied its properties. He discovered a component of muscle contractile protein - actin, which performs muscle functions in combination with myosin. Investigated protein biosynthesis using model systems from animal tissues and bacteria. The author of the textbook "Biochemistry".

Political career

At the end of World War II, he joined the Hungarian Workers' Party , but withdrew from its ranks after the 1956 Uprising and the creation of the All-Russian Popular Party ; no longer included in any party.

Vice President of the National Peace Council (1958-1962).

In 1985 he was elected to the National Assembly of Hungary. He chaired the Presidium of the Hungarian People's Republic from June 29, 1988 to October 18, 1989. He received news of his appointment during a lecture tour in the United States.

Then he left political and scientific life for health reasons.

Awards and titles

  • Order of Merit of the Hungarian People's Republic of Class V (1951),
  • three degrees of the Order of Labor (1954, 1960. 1970),
