History

After the resolution of the Soviet Information Bureau of 1948 and the severance of diplomatic relations with the USSR, Yugoslavia was forced to use exclusively its industry for the production of military equipment. Aircraft designers Kosta Sivchev, Slobodan Zrnich and Svetozar Popovich found old documents and drawings of the pre-war fighter IK-3 of the Zhivoin Rogozharsky factory, on the basis of which they began to create a new Ikarus S-49A aircraft. The first prototype flew in June 1949 , reports of the test results were received by the Ministry of Defense in early 1950.

The S-49A fighter was quite heavy, its engines were made in the USSR, the supply of which ceased after a break in relations. Yugoslavs were forced to purchase French engines Hispano-Suiza HS-127 Z-17. A new, more advanced, but also heavier engine was suitable for aircraft made entirely of metal and having a longer nose, as a result of which work began to change the design of the aircraft. The armament remained the same: the German MG-151 machine gun, the American M2 Browning machine guns, two bombs weighing 50 kg each or four HVAR missiles. Since 1952, the Ikarus S-49Ts version was in service with the army; in the 1950s, about 130 such aircraft were built. Until 1961, aircraft were actively used in the Air Force of Yugoslavia.
