Benjamin Peirce is an American astronomer and mathematician. The father of the American philosopher Charles S. Pierce (1839-1914). He calculated the perturbation of the planets of Uranus and Neptune .

Biography
Pierce became a professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Harvard University in 1833, and a professor of astronomy in 1842. In 1867, Pierce supervised the measurement of the United States coast.
Pierce was primarily responsible for introducing mathematics in American research institutions. Thus, he was the first to offer doctoral level math courses in the United States. He was known for his contributions to the fields of analytical mechanics and linear algebra . In addition, with his early work on astronomy, he played a role in the discovery of the planet Neptune.
