Player Career

Club

Gareka began his professional career in 1978 with Boca Juniors, but he only played 16 games in the first three years with the club. In 1981, he was leased to Atletico Sarmiento, but returned to Boca the following season, where he played with Diego Maradona and scored 8 goals.

In 1985, Gareka earned the eternal hatred of many Bok fans by moving directly to their arch-rivals, River Plate, along with Oscar Ruggeri . Unlike Ruggeri Garek, the next season, at the end of 1985, he joined the Colombian club America Cali. Gareka won two league titles with America in 1985 and 1986. He also had the misfortune of losing in the final of the Libertadores Cup three times in a row (in 1985, 1986 and 1987).

In 1989, Gareka returned to Argentina, where he played for Veles Sarsfield until 1992. In 1993, he joined the Independente, where he played the last few years of his career, which made him one of the few players who played in the four most successful teams in Argentinean football.

National Team

Gareka made his debut in the Argentine national team in 1981 in a match against Poland . He played 20 matches for his team, scoring 5 goals. [2]

Coaching career

Gareka began his career as a trainer with Taglieres Cordoba in 1996. In 1997, he left the club to work at the Independente, but there was no good result, and he returned to Taglieres the same year. Gareka led “Taglieres” to victory in the second division of the Argentine championship in 1997-1998, which allowed the club to go to Example. In 1999, he led them to his first title as a coach, the CONMEBOL Cup, which made them the first team outside of Buenos Aires and the province of Santa Fe to win this tournament. In 2000, Gareka joined Colon , but soon returned to Taliers for the third time.

In 2002, the Tiger became the coach of Quilmes from the second division, and then in 2003 he became the coach of Argentinos Juniors . Gareka almost led them to an exit in Example, but the club faced in the playoffs with the former team of Gareki, “Kilmes”, which they could not get through, having lost the chance of a promotion in the class.

Gareka then teamed up with former teammate Oscar Ruggieri in 2004 to work as an assistant at the Spanish club Elche . In 2005, he became a trainer for his former America Cali club, and later moved to Colombian Santa Fe .

In 2006, he returned for the fourth time to the Talleres, but was unable to prevent their flight into the second division. In October 2007, he became the coach of the Peruvian Universario, and in July 2008 he led the team to the championship.

He returned to Argentina in 2009 to become Veles Sarsfield coach. In his first season with the club, he led them to the Clausura championship. Veles lost in the championship only one match out of nineteen. The 2010–11 season was very successful, as Gareka led Veles, who finished second in Apertura, to the championship in Klausur, gaining 43 points in the campaign (3 more than in their last winning championship). On December 23, 2013, the coach announced that he would not renew the contract with Veles [3] [4] .

May 21, 2014 appointed head coach of the Brazilian “ Palmeiras ”. The contract was signed until June 30, 2015 [5] . September 1, 2014 dismissed from his post [6] . Under his leadership, Palmeiras held 13 games in the Brazilian Serie A 2014 (4 wins, 1 draw and 8 losses) and took 16th place in the standings after the 18th round.

In February 2015, he was appointed coach of the Peru team [7] , with whom he reached the semifinal of the America’s Cup 2015 and the final of the America’s Cup 2019 , and also brought the team to the World Cup .
