Biography
Kuzma Vetchinkin was born on July 20, 1912 in the village of Pokrovka (now - Volokonovsky District, Belgorod Region ) in a peasant family. He graduated from the village school. In 1934, he was called up for military service, served in the border troops of the NKVD of the USSR, commanded a branch on the south-western border of the USSR. In 1938, he graduated from the courses of junior lieutenants , after which he was chief of the 12th frontier guard of the 25th frontier detachment of the Moldovan border area. In 1941 he joined the VKP (b) [1] .
On the first day of the Great Patriotic War, Vetchinkin’s frontier post met with an enemy attack and held an occupied frontier for fourteen hours, beating off 11 enemy counterattacks. In the next three days, the border guards of Vetchinkin, taking an unequal battle, destroyed a large number of enemy soldiers and officers. When reinforcements came to the aid of the border guards, they worked together to delay the enemy’s advance by almost a month. The fighters retreated only after receiving an order from the high command [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of August 26, 1941, Lieutenant Kuzma Vetchinkin was awarded the “ Hero of the Soviet Union” award for the “exemplary accomplishment of combat missions of the command on the front of the fight against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown herewith. ” " Number 617 [1] .
In subsequent years, Vetchinkin was the commander of the battalion, took part in the battles in the Kuban , the defense of Donbass and Rostov-on-Don . In 1943, Vetchinkin graduated from the Higher Border School of the NKVD of the USSR , after which he returned to the front and took part in the liberation of Odessa and the Yassy-Kishinev operation . When in 1944 the Soviet-Romanian border was fully restored, Vetchinkin became the commandant of the border area of the 20th frontier detachment.
He took an active part in the restoration of the destroyed economy and the establishment of duty. In 1951, he graduated from senior management courses at the Military Institute of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs, after which he held senior positions in the Border Troops. He was elected from the Moldavian SSR as a deputy of the Council of Nationalities of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of the 2nd (1946-1950) [2] and 3rd (1950-1954) [3] convocations.
In 1960, in the rank of Colonel Vetchinkin was dismissed. He lived in Odessa , died January 3, 1986 [1] . He was buried at Tairovsky cemetery .
Awards
He was also awarded two orders of the Patriotic War , 1st degree, two orders of the Red Star , as well as a number of medals.
Memory
In 1988, the name Vetchinkin was assigned to the frontier post, which he commanded, his bust and a memorial plaque were installed on its territory [1] .
