Getting
- Crystalline hydrate is obtained by concentration in vacuo of a solution of orthozirconic acid or zirconium dihydroxide oxide in concentrated nitric acid:
- Anhydrous salt is obtained by the reaction of zirconium (IV) chloride and nitric oxide :
Physical Properties
Zirconium (IV) nitrate forms colorless hygroscopic crystals of the composition Zr (NO 3 ) 4 • 5H 2 O.
Chemical Properties
- When dissolved in water, it forms tetranitratoxociriconium acid H 2 [ZrO (NO 3 ) 4 ] • 4H 2 O for which salts K 2 [ZrO (NO 3 ) 4 ] • 4H 2 O are known.
- In dilute solutions it is hydrolyzed to form oxo and hydroxosalts ZrO (NO 3 ) 2 , Zr 2 O 3 (NO 3 ) 2 , Zr 4 O 7 (NO 3 ) 2 and Zr (OH) 2 (NO 3 ) 2 .
