Biography

He was born on October 2, 1946 in the city of Narva in Estonia , and from 1947 until the end of his life he lived in Moscow.

Even in school age he became interested in the history of weapons and archeology. Since 1960, he studied in the archaeological circle at the State Historical Museum and since 1961 he took part in the archaeological excavations of nomadic mounds and ancient settlements.

In 1964 he graduated from an art school with a degree in graphic design, and in 1969 he graduated from the Department of History and Theory of Art of the History Department of Moscow State University .

Since 1973, he worked at the Institute of Oriental Studies (Department of Oriental History, Senior Researcher). In 1973 he defended his thesis on "Mesopotamian miniature schools of the second half of the XII - the first half of the XIII centuries.", Having received the degree of candidate of art history.

In 1975-1977, he illustrated a series of popular science articles on the history of weapons in the magazine Around the World , which for the first time made his name widely known in the USSR .

In 1979 , on the eve of the anniversary of the Battle of Kulikovo , it was decided to open a museum on the Kulikovo field . But suddenly it turned out that there was practically nothing to exhibit: archaeological finds were single and inexpressive. Then M.V. Gorelik invited the director of the museum, Alexander Shkurko, to make reconstruction of armament kits of the 14th century, Old Russian and Tatar. The offer was accepted; the exhibits made by Gorelik and his assistants became the β€œhighlight” of the anniversary exhibition, which opened on August 9, 1980. After that, Gorelik began to order reconstruction of ancient weapons by the largest museums in the world ( State Historical Museum , Tower of London ).

Domestic filmmakers who made films on historical topics turned to Gorelik for advice. Since 1964 (the film β€œ Passion for Andrei ”), he worked as a consultant on the set of more than 20 films. The workshop created by Gorelik (Bud. Of Yarrist firms) produced weapons, costumes, horse equipment and accessories for films: Nizami (1981), Boris Godunov (1986), Sultan Beibars (1989), The Death of Otrar (1991), β€œRichard the Lionheart” (1992), β€œErmak” (1996), β€œQueen Margot” (1996-1997). For the manufacture of weapons, armor and suits for the film "Ermak" Mikhail Viktorovich was awarded in 1996 the highest Russian film award " Nika " [1] .

M.V. Gorelik was an academician of the Russian Academy of Motion Picture Arts.

In 1991, M. V. Gorelik created and headed the Yarrist company, which created exhibits for museums in Moscow, Yaroslavl, Kiev, Alma-Ata and others. He developed and supervised the manufacture of reconstructions in the material: weapons, costumes, equipment. All reconstructions are exhibited in the Museum of the History of the Don Cossacks (the village of Starocherkasskaya), in the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve, the Museum "Words about Igor's Regiment" (Yaroslavl), the Museum on about. Khortytsya , Museum of the History of Ukrainian Literature (Kiev), Museum of Local Lore Arkalyk in Kazakhstan, Museum of Local Lore in Novgorod-Seversky, United Museum-Reserve named after Law (Stavropol), in the State Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan, in the Royal Arsenal (Royal Armouries) (Leeds, England), and are also in private collections.

In recent years, being the author of the concept and president of the Park of History cultural and historical foundation, M. V. Gorelik has developed projects of recreational and educational tourist centers - Parks of History, with the maximum immersion of visitors in an authentic, scientifically authentic historical atmosphere. The project was not completed.

January 12, 2015 Mikhail Gorelik died after an extensive secondary heart attack in a hospital at the Moscow Medical Academy. I.M.Sechenova . On January 16, after parting with the deceased in the morgue, his body was cremated . He was buried at the Vostryakovsky cemetery in Moscow.
