Catholic church of St. Francis Xavier ( lit. Šv. Pranciškaus Ksavero bažnyčia ) is located in the Old Town of Kaunas , Lithuania . It was built on the square near the town hall by the Jesuits and is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier . They opened their first residence in Kaunas in 1649. The construction of the temple began in 1666 ; the temple was consecrated in 1722 [1]

The Russian imperial government transferred the church to the Orthodox Church in 1824. It was returned to the Jesuits only in 1924. After Lithuania was occupied by the USSR in 1940, the Church of St. Francis Xavier was converted into a technical school, the interior was used as a sports hall. The temple was returned to the Jesuits in 1989 . [2] Repair took place in 1992 .
