Keel starred in dozens of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Hollywood musical films in the fifties, the most famous of which are “Take a Gun, Annie!” (1950) with Betty Hatton , “The Floating Theater” (1951) “Kiss Me, Kat” (1953) with Katherine Grayson , “ Seven Brides for Seven Brothers ” with Jane Powell and “Kismet” (1955) with Anne Blyth [1] . After the termination of the contract with MGM, he returned to the Broadway stage and for the next two decades worked mainly in the theater, rarely appearing in various television shows and Westerns. In 1958, he was elected president of the film actors guild of the United States [2] .
In 1981, Kil was invited to the role of Clayton Farrow , an oil tycoon and new patriarch of the family and husband for the heroine Barbara Bel Geddes , in the popular Dallas television series. He was invited to replace the deceased Jim Davis and starred in the show from the beginning of the fourth season, in 1981, until the very finale in 1991. The role in the series was his greatest achievement in his career.
Keel has released several solo albums and singles over his career. On February 8, 1960, he received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame [3] . He had four daughters from three different marriages, as well as ten grandchildren. He died at home on November 7, 2004 from colon cancer .
