Biography
Petr Verteletsky was born in 1923 in the village of Ovidiopol (now a village in the Odessa region of Ukraine ) in a peasant family. He graduated from six classes of the school, after which he worked on a collective farm . In 1940, Verteletsky entered the school of factory apprenticeship at the factory of the October Revolution in Odessa , but did not finish his studies because of the outbreak of World War II . Remained in the occupied territory. After his release in April 1944, Verteletsky was called up for service in the Worker and Peasant Red Army by the Ovidiopolsky District Military Commissariat . Initially, he was a machine gunner , then the second number. By January 1945, the sergeant Pyotr Verteletsky had already commanded the machine gun crew of the 1st machine gun company of the 140th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 47th Guards Rifle Division of the 8th Guards Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . Distinguished during the liberation of Poland [1] .
On January 31, 1945, during the battle for the liberation of the city of Schwerin-on-Wart (now Skvezhina , Poland), Verteletsky put down 5 enemy fire points with machine-gun fire and destroyed about 20 German soldiers and officers, which contributed to the successful offensive of infantry units. During the reflection of the enemy counterattack, Verteletsky’s calculation destroyed about 25 enemy soldiers and officers. When the cartridges ran out, the machine gunners engaged in hand-to-hand combat, destroying another 26 soldiers and officers and taking another 34 prisoners. February 3, 1945 Verteletsky died in the explosion of a German mine. It was originally buried in the village of Zhabice , 8 kilometers southeast of Kyustrin , and later reburied at the military cemetery of the city of Gorzów Wielkopolski [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for “courage and heroism shown in the struggle against the German invaders,” Sergeant Pyotr Verteletsky was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and three medals "For Courage" [1] .
Memory
In honor of Verteletsky, a street and a school are named (later the school was renamed in honor of T. G. Shevchenko) in Ovidiopol. Busts were installed on the central square of Ovidiopol and in the courtyard of vocational school No. 14 in Odessa [1] .
