Biography, career
Nikpai began his sporting activities in Kabul, Afghanistan, at the age of 10 years [2] . During the bloody conflict for the capture of the capital of Kabul between the civilian militarized forces of Afghanistan and the forces of the Taliban, his family leaves the city and settles in one of the many Iranian refugee camps. Soon Nikpai becomes a member of the Taekwondo refugee team from Afghanistan, this happens after he watches movies with scenes of use by martial arts heroes.
At the end of the conflict, he returned to Kabul in 2004 and continued his training at the state Olympic center for training athletes. During the 2006 Asian Games in Doha , Qatar , Nikpay competes in the super lightweight division, where he loses to the future silver medalist Nattapong Tevavetchapong from Thailand in the 1/8 finals.
Nikpay played for his country at the 2008 Summer Olympics , knocking out two-time world champion Juan Antonio Ramos from Spain in the course of the fight, and finally won a bronze medal; this achievement was the first "medal" achievement of Afghanistan at the Olympic Games in history. Nikpai becomes a national hero; upon his return to the airport, a crowd of thousands gathers. His phone call was congratulated by Nikpai and the President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai , giving him a house, a car and other benefits from the state [3] . As Nikpay stated in his interview after the victory [4] [5] ,
| I hope this will be a message of peace to my country after 30 years of war |
During the 2012 Summer Olympics , Nikpay lost to Iranian Mohammad Baghey Motamed , again taking the bronze medal, defeating Briton Martin Stamper in third place.
