Born in a family of Russian-Jewish origin. Capella's parents owned a bookstore on Lexington Avenue . He studied with Olga Samaroff first at the Philadelphia Conservatory, and then at the Juilliard School . In 1941 , he won the competition for young performers under the auspices of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Naumburg Competition for young performers . Since the late 1940s He has performed extensively in the USA, Canada, Europe and Australia. In the summer of 1953 , Capell conducted a large-scale tour of Australia , performing for three and a half months with 37 concerts, not only in Melbourne and Sydney , but throughout the continent; Capella’s last concert took place on October 22 in Geelong , a week before the plane on which Capell returned to the United States crashed in the mountains upon approaching San Francisco.
Capell was considered by many music critics to be the most promising American pianist of the post-war generation. His play was distinguished by energy and power, so it was not by chance that perhaps the most popular piece in the Capella's repertoire was Aram Khachaturian's piano concerto. However, over time, he became more interested in the nuances, he studied informally with Arthur Schnabel , turned to compositions requiring more ease and accuracy (in particular, Mozart ). Among the well-known recordings of the Capella are Chopin’s music (especially Mazurkas ), “ Pictures from the exhibition ” by Mussorgsky , concerts by Beethoven , Rachmaninov , Shostakovich . “Pictures from the exhibition” performed by Capella were preserved in three recordings (all concert), surprising by the difference in interpretations while maintaining an individual style.
Since 1971 , the Capell International Piano Competition has been held in Maryland .
