Occurs from Graubünden , where until the end of the XIX century. the ruins of their ancestral castle remained; later the Stadion moved to Swabia on the Danube. Information about the genus Stadion dates back to the XIV century.
Christopher von Stadion (1478–1543), Bishop of Augsburg, was a friend of Maximilian I and Ferdinand I , as well as Melanchthon , with whom he negotiated the reunification of churches. Stadion, Johann Caspar von (1567–1641) - Grand Master of the Teutonic Order .
Count Johann-Philip-Karl-Josef von Stadion (1763–1824) Austrian statesman and diplomat, foreign minister, later finance minister of the Austrian empire, founder of the Austrian National Bank.
His brother, Count Friedrich Lothar von Stadion ( de: Friedrich Lothar von Stadion ; 1761–1811), was at first a clergyman, but then switched to public service; in 1805–1807 he was instructed to prevent Bavaria from an alliance with Napoleon and to incline to the side of Austria; during the war of 1809 he was the quartermaster general of the Archduke Charles . He owns "Berichte über die Beziehungen zwischen Öesterreich und Bayern 1807-1809" (Vienna, 1891).
The son of Johann Philip Franz (1806-1853) was an official and politician of the Austrian Empire.
