Etymology
The name Ayia Napa comes from the centrally located monastery of the same name , founded by the Venetians. The word "Ayia" (Agia) is translated from Greek as "holy", the word "napa" is archaic and means "tree alley". In ancient times, the area surrounding the city was covered with dense forest.
History
A settlement on this site has existed since Byzantine times. In the XIV century, a monastery was founded.
Geography
Ayia Napa is located next to Cape Greco in the eastern part of Cyprus, south of Famagusta , and forms part of a large area known as Kokkinokoria (a name associated with the red color of the soil). The village is part of the Famagusta region, more precisely, from the beginning of the Turkish occupation in 1974 - in the remaining southern part of this region. Ayia Napa is located 8 kilometers from Protaras , a village that, in its development, is similar to it, but is mainly focused on family vacations and the local population.
Temples and Monasteries
In the center of the village is the ancient Ayia Napa Monastery. The monastery, and beyond it, the area, got this name thanks to the icon "Panagia Napa" (can be translated as "The Most Holy Theotokos (from) the forest") found in the forest. According to one version, in the cave, where the church is now located, the hunter found a miraculous icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The hunter's dog was the first to notice the luminous icon and, stopping in front of it, began to bark persistently, attracting the attention of the owner. Upon learning of the discovery of the icon, numerous believers began to visit this place in the cave. In all likelihood, the icon was placed in the cave during the period of iconoclasm (VII-VIII century A.D.) and thanks to this it was saved. In the XIV century, the cave was built on and thus the monastery church was founded. Over time, the name of the icon began to be called Ayia Napa.
The cave, cache and source testify to the existence of the Christian community from Byzantine times. The name Ayia Napa was first mentioned in 1366, but, according to reports, has been applied to this area before. The monastery in its present form was founded in the 15th century during the Venetian rule in Cyprus.
Now the monastery acts only as a museum. The daily services of the Cypriot Orthodox Church are held in the new church, built 50 meters from the monastery. Here you can confess and take communion.
