Biography
Father is a Chinese merchant who emigrated to Cuba, his mother is a mulatto with an admixture of Indian blood (daughter of a slave from Congo). In 1916 the family moved to Havana . In 1918 - 1923, Lam studied at the School of Fine Arts in Havana, then moved to Spain. He was influenced by surrealism , combining it with Afro-Cuban ( santeria ) mythological motifs and visual traditions. In 1932, a great tragedy happened in the life of the artist - the death of his wife and child. This event was reflected in his work, giving him alarming and gloomy features. He took part in the Civil War in Spain on the side of the Republicans. In 1938 he came to Paris, where he met with Picasso and his friends ( Matisse , Leger , Miro , Braque , Eluard ), in the same year he visited Mexico , where he became friends with Frida Calo and Diego Rivera . In 1939, his first solo exhibition was held in the Paris gallery of Pierre Leib . In 1940 he moved to Marseille, where he took part in the creation of the “Marseille game”. In the same year, Lam, at the suggestion of Andre Breton, illustrated his book Fata Morgana (published in Marseille , reprinted in Buenos Aires ), later illustrated the books of Rene Chard and others. In the 1940s, he received recognition both in his homeland and worldwide. In 1942 he moved to Cuba, where he lived for 10 years, then returned to France. He was in opposition to the Batista regime , in 1955 he exhibited at the University of Havana in solidarity with protesting students. He supported the new socialist government by writing The Third World for the presidential palace.
