History
The city was founded by the Medes in the 7th century BC. e. During the reign of the Arshakid dynasty, it was known as Saavakineh and was one of the most important cities of the empire . In the Middle Ages it was a stronghold of the Delemites and Kajars . It was badly destroyed during the Mongol invasion of Persia and restored by the Ilkhanids . Since the transfer of the capital to Tehran, it has gradually lost its former significance.
Attractions
In Sava and its environs there are a number of architectural monuments and archaeological sites [6] [7] [8] [9] , which have historical and cultural value. In the center of the city is the so-called Old Square, to the north of which is the Red Mosque [10] , relating to the period of Seljuk domination. The Jame Mosque [11] , with a dome with a diameter of 16 meters and a height of 14 meters, belongs to the same period. According to statistics from the Save Cultural Heritage Department, 228 cultural and historical monuments are located in the city and in the immediate vicinity, including caravanserais , markets, religious buildings, trade routes and tellies . At the same time, 53 objects are included in the list of national monuments of Iran.
Sava Cathedral Mosque, which is a valuable monument of early Islamic architecture, was built 1200 years ago. This mosque, decorated with stucco and tiles , has an area of 2500 square meters. It consists of a courtyard, a porch, a minaret , several shabestans (prayer houses), a dome, two old mihrabs with inscriptions in the Kufic style, as well as two mihrabs belonging to the period of the Safavid dynasty and decorated with inscriptions executed in handwriting suls. The inscriptions are the verses of the Qur'an : “Predestination”, “Sincerity” and “Cathedral”. On the western side, between the Shabestans, a porch rises, on each side of which a hujra is made with a narrow aisle (cell for students of madrassas ). The lower part of the dome, inside, is decorated with tiles. The mosque was repeatedly restored under the Seljukids , Safavids and Kajars . In the XX century it was included in the list of national monuments of Iran [12] .
Near the Jame Mosque, there is a brick minaret dating back to the Seljuk rule. The lower part of the minaret has a simple shape, and the upper is decorated with brick patterns and petroglyphs made in Kufic writing.
Also, in the east of the city is the tomb of Seyid Ishaq. The body of Sultan Ishaq, the descendant of the founder of Islam, Mohammed, is buried in it. The mausoleum has the shape of a tower, and its architectural style is similar to the buildings of the Seljuk era of the mid-13th century. During the rule of the Safavid dynasty, the dome was redone. The entrance to the tomb is 6 meters high, and the height of the entire building is 12 meters. The tomb gained fame thanks to the original brickwork and tiles above the burial place, made in 1298 (676 of the lunar Hijra ). The mihrab of the mausoleum is decorated with tiles and stucco with colorful patterns. In the middle of the tomb is a fence with a lattice made of wood, and inside there is actually a grave [12] .
