The President of Rhodesia is the formal head of the unrecognized state of Rhodesia . The post was established in 1970, when Rhodesia proclaimed itself a republic.

This list includes the presidents of Rhodesia (1970-1979), as well as the only administrator of the government whose functions coincided with the presidency at a time when Rhodesia de jure remained the dominion of Great Britain (1965-1970), and the only president of the state of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia , proclaimed in the process of the internal settlement of the conflict between the white and black communities of the country.

Just the president of Rhodesia was occupied by two people, two more were acting. All of them were white people of British descent. Like Rhodesia itself, its presidents did not have international legal recognition . Since Rhodesia was a parliamentary republic, the president was a ceremonial figure, while Prime Minister Jan Smith had real power.

Job History

On November 11, 1965 ( 1965-11-11 ) , the government of the Rhodesian Front led by Ian Smith , based on the results of the referendum on independence of Southern Rhodesia (was held on November 5, 1964 ( 1964-11-05 ) ), proclaimed a unilateral declaration of independence countries from the United Kingdom. Governor of Southern Rhodesia Sir Humphrey Gibbs , immediately dismissed the cabinet headed by Jan Smith, which was ignored by Smith, who announced the introduction of a new constitution, in which the post of governor was replaced by the post of administrator of the government ^[1] , to which Deputy Prime Minister Clifford Dupont was appointed.

At first, Ian Smith sought to preserve Rhodesia as part of the Commonwealth with Elizabeth II as Queen and Head of State of Rhodesia, but later decided to sever constitutional ties with Britain, declaring the country a republic on March 2, 1970 ( 1970-03-02 ) , after which Clifford Dupont took over the post of its president. After Dupont resigned due to poor health in 1975, John Vrathall was elected president in 1976, who died in 1978.

In 1979, an internal settlement was reached in Rhodesia conflict between the white and black communities of the country. On June 1, 1979 ( 1979-06-01 ) , a black majority government was created, and the country was renamed Zimbabwe-Rhodesia . Josiah Zion Gumede was elected its president. Zimbabwe-Rhodesia also did not receive international recognition, and on December 12, 1979 ( 1979-12-12 ) , the United Kingdom resumed colonial control over it in accordance with the decisions of the Lancasterhouse Conference . On April 18, 1980 ( 1980-04-18 ) the independence of Zimbabwe was proclaimed.
