Marta was born in the family of the architect Rudolf Schömig. On February 2, 1930, she married film producer Karl Hartl . She studied acting with Margit von Tolnay and at the Max Reinhardt seminar . At the age of 30, she made her debut at the Theater in Josefstadt . Later she served in various German theaters. Thanks to her husband, Martha Harell made her film debut immediately in the main female role in the film by Geza von Bolvari "Ball at the Opera" (1939), followed by several other famous films. Most often, she got the roles of strong women, who determined the course of events in the plot.

Martha was buried in the Vienna Hitzing cemetery next to her husband. In Vienna Leasing, one of the lanes was named after her name.
