Player Career
As a child, "el Cai" played for a team from his hometown. In 1970, when he was 19, his team played in a match against Rosario Central , Aimar also participated in the game, then he was noticed by Carlos Timoteo Griguol, the team’s then coach, and noted that Aimar is an interesting player who should be invited to view. He managed to successfully pass the test, and he moved to Rosario to play at a local club. His main role was the position of the right midfielder, although, by and large, he was a universal.
In 1971, Angel Labruna , who was then the club’s technical director, insisted that Aymara be released in an important championship match against Estudiantes , the match ended in defeat. However, Rosario won the national championship that year and repeated success two years later.
In 1979, he ended his career with the San Lorenzo de Almagro club, which was then coached by Carlos Bilardo . Aimar was forced to terminate his contract after 6 months at the club, as he suffered from osteoarthritis of the hip joint , with this disease he could not continue to play football.
Coaching career
As a coach, he began with the youth team Ferrocaril Oeste , whose core team was coached by the very same Carlos Timoteo Griguol. Such fruitful cooperation has helped to identify many young talents. As a result, Aimar moved to Deportivo Espanyol in 1988. A year later, he moved to Europe to train Logronies , a modest club from the Spanish championship , with whom he finished seventh in the league, which allowed him to participate in the UEFA Cup .
A year later, he was hired by the Boca Juniors , with whom he won the Super Bowl of Libertadores and the Recop of South America , and in 1991 moved to Rosario Central, a club in which he had played not so long ago. In 1992, he returned to Spain , to Logronies, where he worked until 1994, preventing him from flying to the Second Division in recent days.
Then he went to Celta . In 1996, Aimar returned to Argentina, in the “San Lorenzo”, also not a stranger to his club. However, his stay at the helm of the team was short, and he returned to Spain and again to Logrones, and later moved to Tenerife , replacing Juan Manuel Lillo.
In 2002, after a short stay in Lanus , Aimar signed a contract with Leganes club at the request of compatriot Daniel Greenbank, Aimar owed such an honor to his experience in the Spanish League. However, after resigning from Greenblanc’s post in the middle of the season, Aimar resigned as a coach, not ending the season. He did not return to professional football until 2005, when he signed a contract with Kilmes , but after a series of poor results he was fired.
Beyond Football
After finishing his career as a coach, Aimar went into politics , becoming an assistant minister of sports in the province of Santa Fe, Argentina.
In early February 2008, he began working in the sports program “90 Minutes of Football” at Fox Sports.
