Biography
Sidney Preston Osbourne was born on May 17, 1884 in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1903, he graduated from high school and enrolled at Georgetown University in Washington , where he became interested in politics.
In 1898, Osborne was a minister in the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Arizona , from 1903 to 1905 - a delegate to the US Congress , and in 1910 - a member of the Arizona Constitutional Convention. From 1912 to 1919, he was Secretary of the State of Arizona, and from 1933 to 1934 - Director of the State Duty Department.
Osborne three times unsuccessfully ran for governor of Arizona, until he was finally elected on November 5, 1940. Governor Osborne was re-elected three times in a row. After taking office, Osborne gathered all the top state officials and forced them to sign a letter of resignation, but without a date. If in the future the official became an obstacle for the state, the governor set a date and officially announced the resignation of the official. During Osborne’s tenure, military facilities were being built throughout the state, which had a favorable effect on the economy and led to a doubling of the population.
During his fourth term, Osborne suffered from Lou Gehrig's disease , was barely able to communicate with employees, and died in his office on May 25, 1948. Acting Governor is Secretary of State Dan Garvey . Sidney Preston Osbourne was buried in Phoenix, Arizona.
