Biography

Valberg was born in 1810. When he was 9 years old, his father died, and after 2 years his mother. First, he took private lessons, and then entered a gymnasium in Linkoping . In 1829, he began studying chemistry at Uppsala University , and a year later he changed his specialization in forestry and agriculture. In 1832, he accompanied entomologist Karl Henrik Boheman on his trip to Norway. In 1833 and 1834 he traveled to Sweden and Germany, carrying out various forest research projects [4] .

Between 1838 and 1856, he traveled to South Africa and sent thousands of animals and plants to Sweden, including large mammals such as elephants, rhinos, giraffes, as well as thousands of bird species and more than 8000 species of insects. When exploring the upper course of Limpopo, Valberg was killed by a wounded elephant [4] .

Since the death message had not yet arrived in Sweden, he was elected in October 1856 a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . Thus, Walberg became the only member of the Academy who was elected after his death.

Eponyms

Many species of animals and plants were discovered by Walberg and named after him, including the silver eagle ( Aquila wahlbergi ), Walberg's wing ( Epomophorus wahlbergi ) and Walberg's homopholis ( Homopholis wahlbergii ), as well as the African mantis Pseudocrabothra wahlbergii .
