Handyman (Old Believers)

The handicraft is a small square rug (thin pillow) for the hands and head during the bowing of the Old Believers . The size of the side of this square ranges from 30 to 40 cm. Conventionally, the handcuff is divided into three components: front (external), back (lower) and internal (middle). Religious symbolism in the form of squares, stripes or triangles of dim colors, the number of which has a sacred meaning, is applied to the front (clean, upper) part of the application. However, the image of the cross on the handicrafts is usually missing. Felt, cotton wool or pieces of material are placed inside. All this is quilted.

Symbols of the Handicrafts

  • Square - Earth.
  • 4 (triangle inside the square) - the number of evangelists.
  • 5 (squares) - the number of wounds of Christ
  • 7 (concentric squares) - the number of cathedrals and sacraments.
  • 9 (squares) - the number of angelic ranks and blisses
  • 12 (triangles: 4 squares in one another) - the number of apostles
