Family

Ed Manning (1944–2011), Danny’s father, was also an NBA player who played more than 600 matches in the league. In turn, Danny Manning's son, Evan accepted the invitation to play for the Kansas basketball team in the 2012-13 season, [1] [2] and his daughter Taylor plays for the Kansas volleyball team. [3]

University

In 1988, Manning led Kansas to victory in the NCAA Championship , receiving several individual prizes, including becoming the most useful player in the finals . The Kansas team , led by trainer Larry Brown, has gone down in the NCAA 's Danny and Miracles story. Manning is ranked 8th in terms of points in the NCAA championships .

Manning is also indirectly involved in the emergence of the Dream Team : it is generally accepted that one of the reasons for its creation was the defeat of the US team in the 1987 Pan American Games finals in Indianapolis , when the best American students ( Admiral Robinson played in the team ) actually defeated one Brazilian basketball player is Oscar Schmidt . The Americans during the match were 68:54, but lost with a difference of 5 points.

1988 Olympics

Manning, as the best student basketball player of 1988, was considered the leader of the US team at the 1988 Olympics . Having won all 5 matches in the group and defeating the Puerto Rico national team in the quarterfinal 94:57, in the semifinal the US team lost to the USSR national team 76:82 [4] . Manning lost the duel to his counterpart Alexander Volkov [5] , without scoring a single point in that match [6] . In the match for third place, Australia was defeated 78:49. Thus, Manning won the bronze medal of the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul .

Beginning of an NBA Career (Clippers)

Before the start of the 1988/1989 season, Manning was selected under number one by the Clippers . At the same time, such players as Rick Smiths (number 2 of the draft), Mitch Richmond (number 5), Dan Marley (number 14), Rod Strickland (number 19), Vinnie Del Negro (number 29), Steve Kerr (number 50) came to the NBA. )

Manning's debut took place on November 12, 1988, in a match with the Phoenix : he spent 27 minutes on the court, gaining 12 points with 4 rebounds , but the Clippers lost 127: 138 [7] .

Due to injuries in his first season , the 1st draft number spent only 26 games, leaving Clippers in the starting lineup 18 times [8] . Richmond became the best newcomer .

Danny got a good game bond with point guard Mark Jackson who came to the Clippers from the Knicks . It was with Manning and Jackson that the Clippers first got into the NBA playoffs in 1992 for the first time since 1976, where they lost to Utah in five games with Malone and Stockton .

And next season, Manning led his team to the playoffs , and again Los Angeles, whose coach during the season became Larry Brown , well-known to Manning at the university , lost 2-3, this time to Houston .

It is no coincidence that in 1993 and 1994 Manning participated in the NBA All-star game .

Atlanta (1994)

The 1993/94 season for Clippers turned out to be a failure, and even Manning could not turn the tide. In the spring, Manning was traded for Dominic Wilkins in Atlanta . Atlanta had a very regular season , the leading players of the team were Muki Blaylock and his most experienced Kevin Willis , who spent their best season . Manning needed to fit into the dodgy defenses of great trainer Wilkens .

However, the playoffs turned out to be a big disappointment. After a difficult victory in the series with Miami , Manning's new team entered the Indiana , led by super sniper Reggie Miller and number 2 of the 1988 draft Dutch center Smiths . In the first match with Indiana , Manning was the best with 21 points, 8 rebounds , 6 assists and 3 interceptions , but Atlanta lost. Having won the second match (20 points each against Manning and Willis ), the winners of the East lost in the third and fourth game, in which Manning scored 35 points with 70% of hits from the game. The score 3-1 in the NBA series is extremely rare. This happened this time too: having won the 5th game with a score of 88:76 (Manning has 20 points and 9 rebounds ), Atlanta limply lost 18 points in the final match of the series, where Smiths flashed (27 points). Manning in the last match for Atlanta marked a double double , but made 7 losses .

5 years at the Phoenix

Before the 1994/1995 season, it was anticipated that a pair of Phoenix Barkley Manning forwards would be the strongest in the association . However, both suffered trauma: Sir Charles had problems with his back, Manning with a knee.

In the summer of 1996, Barkley left the Phoenix . The start of the season was a failure, and the coach changed at the club . The 1996/1997 regular season was unconvincing in terms of results (less than 50% of victories), and losing to Seattle in the first round of the playoffs was logical.

In the 1997/1998 season, Manning played at center position. The starting five was this: C. Johnson , Rex Chapman, Kidd , Cliff Robinson, MacDyess . Manning happened to be the hero of the most memorable match of the whole season : on November 14, Portland 140: 139 was beaten in the Rose Garden in the fourth overtime . Manning scored 35 points, including scoring 6 points in a row in the 4th overtime after the hosts received a 6th foul Sabonis [9] . Indicators for the season : an average of 13.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists . Since Manning 59 of the 70 games held went off the bench, he was nominated for the Sixth Player of the Year prize and received it. Interestingly, in a survey of US and Canadian journalists , the 32-year-old Manning beat the 19-year-old Kobe Bryant : 57 votes against the 31st [10] . He missed the playoffs of 1997/98 because of a knee injury sustained on April 7 in a game with Sacramento , and the team lost to San Antonio in the first round.

In the playoffs of the 1998/1999 season , the Phoenix lost to Portland in the first round. On May 12, 1999, Manning spent the last match in his career for the Phoenix (the third game of the series ended with a score of 93: 103), gaining 13 points [11] .

For five seasons at Phoenix , Manning received $ 38 million.

In 1999, the Phoenix traded Manning, Pat Garrity and two picks in the Orladno draft for the Hardwood Penny . However, Manning and Dale Ellis were immediately exchanged at Milwaukee for Gilliam and Gatling [1] .

Milwaukee Season

In the first round of the playoffs, the team lost to Indian leader Indiana , but looked very decent. In the first match, “ Milwaukee ” led 67:62, but lost in the end 85:88 (Manning’s former Clipper teammate Mark Jackson flashed, giving 11 assists ) [12] . In the second match, the hosts were simply defeated 91: 104 (after the first half, Milwaukee scored 16 points) [13] . In the course of the third match, “ Milwaukee ” scored 12 points, but thanks to the outstanding game of R. Miller (34 points), “ Indiana ” won 109: 96, thereby ruining the jubilee, 100th play-off match to the coach “ Bucks ” Karl . However, the fourth game was won by the owners of the parquet 100: 87 [14] , and everything was decided in the final match of the series, in which the Larry Bird team wrested the victory 96:95, Miller scored again.

The Bucks leaders in the 1999/2000 season were Ray Allen , Glenn Robinson and Sam Cassel , Manning, leaving the bench, scored an average of 4.6 points and left the team in the summer.

Utah Veteran Team

Manning came to Utah in the summer of 2000 as a free agent , signing a $ 1.2 million annual contract [15] , joining long-standing Jazz leaders Carl Malone and John Stockton . Also included were 35-year-old John Starks , Doniel Marshall and Alden Polanis. Manning completed the regular season with almost 65% of wins. however, in the first round of the playoffs, Utah lost to Dallas , leading 2-0 in the series [16] . In the third game in Dallas, “ Jazz ” lost only 3 points with a confident Manning game (19 points) and Stockton's triple double [17] . In the fourth game, 33 points of Nowitzki (Manning limited himself to 10 points) allowed the Texans to defeat Utah 107: 77 [18] . In the final match, Utah scored 14 points after the 3rd quarter, however, 9.8 seconds before the final siren, the Dallas went ahead 84:83, and K. Malone did not score in the last seconds [19] to the great disappointment of those gathered in Delta Center ".

In the summer, Manning left Utah , it is symbolic that Andrei Kirilenko , who is 15 years younger than Manning, came to Utah at the same time.

Retirement ( Dallas , Detroit )

In August 2001, Manning moved to Dallas .

Detroit 's newcomer Tyshon Prince added sharply to the playoffs , which further reduced Maning’s possible time on the court. In the final match of the 2002/2003 season with Dallas , Manning became the highest scoring player of the match (18 points) [20] .

However, the unexpected defeat of Detroit in the conference finals did not allow Manning to play in the NBA finals. The playoffs of that season were marked by the end of the next Lakers dynasty.

In total, Danny Manning played 883 games in the strongest basketball league in the world .

Coaching career

Since the 2012/13 season, Manning has worked as head coach of the Tulsa team for two years. On April 4, 2014, ESPN reported that Manning became the head coach of Wake Forest University [21] .

Cinema

Danny Manning starred in the films The White Mile (1994) and Eddie (1996).
