According to the plot of “Chobitov,” the village guy moves to the city, intending to combine independent life and preparation for another attempt to enter college . He is absolutely delighted with the new “Persokoms”, personal humanoid helpers robots that flood the city. However, he could not afford his own Persian. An accidental find of a thrown out and, as it later turns out, unusual persocom results in adventures full of discoveries.

Based on the Chobits, two games have been released: one for GameBoy Advance and one for PS2 . Two OVA : retelling series and spin-offs - continued the anime television series. Five Drama CDs have also been released in Japan. There are various fan-oriented products, such as calendars, artbooks , and figurines. [4] [10] [11]

World

The plot of the Chobita manga is set in the near future and describes the events that occur after the story described in another CLAMP manga - Angelic Layer . Technologies in this future are not very different from those that can be found in any modern city. [12] The main difference is that following the creation of robots for the entertaining "Arena of Angels", humanoid robots of persocom ( Japanese パ ソ コ ン pasokon ) were developed (short for PC, personal computer ( Japanese パ ー ソ ナ ル コ ン ピ ュ ー タ ー pa: that:) ). These robots are released in two versions - in human height and placed on the palm of your hand mobile versions. Regardless of their size, the appearance of beautiful young men and women is attached to the Persokom. They differ from people only in a constructive element remotely resembling stylized ears. In later models, the ears are miniaturized and even this difference disappears. All persocomes have connectors for connecting to peripheral devices, which allows them to be used as classic computers. They are able to communicate in a natural language, to learn, to show emotions, and also to work in the service sector. For some, they become a full replacement for living people. There is even a known case of marriage between a person and a Persocom. Despite their high price, they are very popular in the world of Chobits and are firmly established in the everyday life of Japanese people. All actions of the Persians, including the manifestation of emotions, are subject to the program embedded in them. However, there are rumors on the network about the existence of certain “Chobits” that can act without software and show real emotions, rather than emulating them.

Story

Hideki Motosuva ( Japanese 本 須 和 秀 樹 Motosuva Hideki ) comes to Tokyo from a remote province to study in preparatory courses and try to go to college again. He does not understand much in modern technology, but, like most of his peers, he dreams of his persocom . However, the chances of accumulating enough funds to buy are very illusory. One day, on his way home, he finds a Persocom girl lying motionless in a pile of garbage.

After turning on the Persian, she could only say one word: “ti” ( Japanese ち ぃ ti:) , so Hideki gave her the name Ti . Hideki's neighbor suggested that Ti was a makeshift Persian, and introduced the character to Minoru Kokubunji , a 12-year-old genius specializing in makeshift Persecuts. Minoru could not analyze T and find out anything about her past, but said that the legend about the so-called chobits - Persokom with free will - goes on the net.

The main storyline of the work is made by the heroes' attempts to find out the nature of Ty, as well as various cases of relations between people and their robots. Almost each of the main characters is involved in one or another story related to the need to get along with people or Persians. The main characters - Hideki and Ti - are faced with the need to understand their feelings and, in the end, decide who they become for each other.

In addition to the main pair, five additional storylines can be traced in the work, revolving around issues of human-technology relations relevant for the 21st century. [13] Also in the anime and manga there are inserts from the book for children, “A City In Which There Is No One,” which Hideki wrote in the story and reads to T and in which the main events are retold. The images in this book are even more simplified and hyperbolized . [12] Scenes from this book comprise the most lyrical and poetic moments of the work. [14]

Characters

Hideki Motosuva ( 本 須 和 秀 樹 Motosuva Hideki ) is the protagonist, a student of 19 years old [15] , a tall guy with regrown dark hair, shy of the opposite sex. He comes to Tokyo from the province where he lived with his parents on a farm. Parents do not help Hideki with money, so he works, but he makes ends meet with varying degrees of success. Heard about modern technologies , such as the Internet or Persocomes, but plainly knows nothing about them and is not versed in technology. Equally naive both in dealing with her and with women. [12] A guest in a big city is absorbed in the dreams of his persocom, wanting to watch DVDs, use mail, play games and visit erotic sites with his help. Shy and indecisive on dates (the reviewer at Mania.com ironic that Hideki masterfully misses out on perfect chances [16] ). Due to the unaccustomed to the human environment, he involuntarily speaks to himself, as a result of which he often gets into awkward situations. At the same time, his monologues greatly contribute to the disclosure of the character and strongly distinguish him from a number of typical ronin heroes [17] . First, Hideki constantly assures himself and those around him that Persocomes are still not people, so there can be no romantic relationship with them. Finding Ti, rejoices that in this way he was able to get himself a persocom for free. And, despite the difference in the outcome of its launch from expectations, he is not going to throw it away. Instead, he teaches her everything he knows and takes care of her in every way. Many characters consider him a good person. Towards the end of the story, Hideki redefines his views on the relationship between people and the Persians, and also admits that he loves T.

Seiyu : Tomokazu Sugita

Ti ( ち ぃ Ti:) is a humanoid robot with a Persian, similar to a young girl. She is very beautiful, she has long platinum-colored hair and white-pink “ears”, and her outfits are made in the popular “ Gothic Lolita ” style in Japan, which gives her the look of a fairy-tale heroine, a sort of android version of Alice from Wonderland . [12] One of the legendary chobits. However, contrary to rumors, it is no different from other Persians. In the crotch of Ti there is a restart button, when pressed, all its data is destroyed. Her task is to find a person who can love her, even realizing that in front of him is a machine that is incapable of human feelings. If Ty's chosen one cannot show such feelings, she will deprive all Persoks of the ability to distinguish one person from another. In connection with this mission, Tee's entire memory is destroyed. At the beginning of the story, Ti is thrown into the trash, where Hideki's main character finds her. She was lying there almost naked, only wrapped in bandages. He picks it up and takes it home, not noticing that there is a data disc in the garbage. After Hideki finds a way to activate it, it turns out that Ti can only speak the word “ti” ( Japanese ち ぃ ti:) , which becomes her name. Her empty eyes and the ability to repeat only one word make her a pretty doll in the beginning, she can be compared to a Pokemon in a dress. [12] Since Hideki does not have money for software for her, he has to teach Ti everything on his own. She immediately becomes attached to Hideki and strives to be closer to him. Hideki gradually becomes T's chosen one and retains his feelings, even learning that the legendary chobits are in fact no different from other Persians.

Manga

In Japan, Chobits were released by Kodansha in eight volumes. The manga licensed by the American company Tokyopop became a hit in the USA [18] and brought fame to the CLAMP group. [19] In 2003 and 2004, according to ICv2 , she was one of the top sellers in the book market. [20] [21] [22] In addition to the USA, manga was published in Australia and New Zealand (translated by Tokyopop ) [23] , in Hong Kong ( Jonesky publisher), in Singapore ( Chuang Yi ), in South Korea ( Daiwon CI ) , in Brazil ( JBC ), in Russia, as well as in many countries of Europe. In 2003, Kodansha released an art book (graphic album) entitled “Your Eyes Only” and the book “A City in Which There Is No One”, supposedly written on behalf of the protagonist. [24]

The Chobits manga belongs to the Seinen genre, that is, adult men are its target audience. However, the critic of Anime News Network writes about the “lovely sensation of shojo, ” a genre aimed at teenage girls, in which most of the work of CLAMP was created. [25]

Anime

The anime, shot by Chobits at Madhouse Studios, consists of 26 episodes. The main director is Morio Asaka ( Jap. 浅 香 守 生 ) , the character designer is Hisashi Abe ( Jap. 阿 . 恒 ) . Operators are Takeshi Katsurayama ( Japanese 葛山剛 士 ) and Katsuyoshi Kishi ( Japanese 岸 克 芳 ) , composer Keitaro Takanami ( Japanese 高 浪 敬 太郎 ) . The anime was produced by Tetsuo Gensho ( Jap. 源 生 哲雄 ) , Yuichi Sekido ( Jap. 関 戸 雄 一 ) and Tatsuya Ono ( Jap. 小野 達 矢 ) .

The series was first broadcast on Animax and TBS . Later, the series and one OVA were released on 9 DVDs . [2] This OVA is alternatively called the 27th episode of the television series [37] and retells the events of previous episodes. The second OVA is a small special issue , a story with the same main characters, an appendix to the 7th DVD in the release from Geneon Entertainment . In addition to Russia, the anime television series was broadcast in Korea ( AniOne TV ), France ( Europe 2 TV ), Spain ( Animax España and Buzz Channel ) and other European countries, as well as in the USA, Australia and New Zealand. [38]

In Russia, “Chobits” were released by MC Entertainment on 4 DVDs of 150 minutes each, without OVA and without two series of retelling of events that happened earlier: the 9th and 18th . [7]

Structurally, the series are structured as follows: they start with the opening screen saver, continue with the main part and end with the closing screen saver, followed by the announcement of the next series.

Differences between Anime and Manga

Cover of the English version of the first volume of the manga

The themeanime.org review provides such a general description of the changes that if the manga focused on Hideki's experiences, then the anime emphasis shifted to Ti and the fan-service scenes with her participation. [39] Another difference between anime and manga is the difference in the description of the underlying principles of functioning of the Persians. Also in the anime, additional storylines were added (the so-called “ fillers ”), [39] and the events from the manga plot were further separated. The starting point of the series is the moment of arrival in the city, admission to courses and job searches. In the manga, these events are already in the past and it is mentioned that Hideki has already spent about six months in the city. At the end of the anime adaptation, events are added that make the main characters temporarily part, and it also clarifies the existence of two special programs embedded in Ti. There is only one such program in manga.

The living conditions of some heroes have been revised. Simbo in the manga lives separately and is familiar with Hideki in preparatory courses. In the anime, they live in neighboring rooms of the same dormitory.
The anime explicitly states that Yumi lives and works in her father’s Japanese pub , in which Hideki works. In the manga, the owner of the pub and / or father Yumi is not among the acting characters (although he is occasionally present there), there is no mention of Yumi's place of residence.

According to the manga, Persocomes are robots by their nature, but its creator, Itiro Mihara, was not intentionally used to avoid limiting their creations to the so-called “three laws of robotics”. In the real world, such “laws” exist and are formulated by science fiction writer Isaac Asimov , who, incidentally, is mentioned in the manga by Minoru Kokubunji in one of Simbo’s emails.

It is also mentioned in the manga that the term “Chobits” was coined by one of the characters, Itiro Mihara, and comes from the word “chobi” ( Japanese ち ょ び you , small) , which he used to describe everything that, in his opinion, was “small and hopelessly lovely. ” In addition, the word “Chobits” is a partial anagram on behalf of Ichiro’s wife, recorded in Latin, “Chitose Hibiya”. This word, among other things, is used as a password for a number of Persocomes-heroes of works (both anime and manga). With reference to the security requirements existing in the world of Chobits, the password is required to consist of a mixture of Katakana , Hiragana and / or Latin characters. Directly during the course of the story, the main character comes to a variant of the password word ( Japanese ち ょ び っ ツ Tebitsu ) , in which the last syllable “tsu” ( yap. ツ tsu ) is a symbol of katakana, and the rest is written in hiragana. Such a record is also used in the original name “Chobits”.

On top of that, in the manga there are / detailed some important details of the work that are omitted from the anime: a more complete version of the illustrated book “A City in Which There Is No One”, a more complete disclosure of the relationship between two Chobite Sisters and their loved ones (a detailed excursion history of previous events), and also, there are events that were not covered in the anime series (for example, the consequences of the termination of the functioning of the Persocomes, some conclusions and fabrications of the Persocom Zimo about the events that occurred).

The key events of the endings of the anime and manga are different: for example, in the manga, Dita was unable to get close to Ty and interrupt the process (her actions were blocked by Winter ) of the secret Chobit program execution (that is, in fact, the process proceeded as it was intended ) The true reasons for such a strange arrangement of the Ti on / off button are also revealed - they are, in a way, artificial conditions of the program designed to bring its execution to a specific, predetermined result. For the same reason, Hideki cannot have “complete intimacy” with Ti (the issue of sexual relations with Persians in the work was not considered, but some aspects of both manga and anime - for example, a scene in a strip club - clarify aspects of such relationships), but in anime, this fact is presented in a completely different way - such closeness is available only to someone who is really dear to T and is “the one she needs.”

OVA

OVA 's Chobits were not televised during the premiere. The first OVA is a brief overview of previous episodes, [37] the second is a six-minute video titled “Chibits: Plum and Kotoko Deliver” . [40] The second OVA was originally published on the seventh DVD release of Geneon Entertainment . The first is on a separate retelling series DVD in a release from TBS .

Soundtrack

The Pioneer Entertainment label released two soundtracks : Chobits Original Soundtrack 001 on July 1, 2003 and Chobits Original Soundtrack 002 on October 7, 2003 .

Three singles from Victor Entertainment were dedicated to the opening and closing themes of the anime: Let Me Be with You by Round Table featuring Nino and Raison d'être and Ningyo Hime by Rie Tanaki . In addition, on February 17, 2004, Geneon (the new name of the former Pioneer Entertainment [41] ) released an album of character songs, “Chobits Character Song Collection” .

When Ti enters Freya’s mode (for example, in the 8th episode, when Hideki looks for Ti), a song called “Dark Chii's Theme” sounds, which is included in the soundtrack “Best of Chobits”, but taken from another anime based on CLAMP : “ X ” (OVA), where it is used in the songs of “Fuma / Kamui Dialogue Mix”; in “Chobits” the version without vocals is used . [42]

Throughout the series, the opening theme is Let Me Be with You. The closing topic is changing. From the 1st to the 12th series, “Raison d'Être” is used (from the French - “The Meaning of Existence”), from the 13th to the 25th - “Ningyohime” ( Jap. The Little Mermaid Princess ) . At the end of the last, 26th episode, Katakoto no Koi sounds ( jap. Awkward love ) performed by duet Rie Tanaki and Tomokazu Sugita .

Drama CD

Covers Drama CD "Chobitov"

Following the premiere of the anime in Japan, Victor Entertainment released five Drama CDs , [43] CDs with audio recordings of original stories in Japan by Chobits. The stories revealed in the Drama CD fit into the general plot of the anime “Chobits”, are sustained in the same genre, use the same characters, seiyu (voicing actors) and music as this anime. The changes that affected the characters when adapting the manga in the anime are also saved in the Drama CD.

Each disc contains several tracks. The first track in each case was given for the next trip from a series of bizarre excursions to the homes of the heroes of the “Chobits”. In the role of a meticulous guide acts as a Persomok Sumomo . The main stories follow in the form of several audio files. Each of the main stories begins with the opening musical theme of Let Me Be with You and ends with the closing musical theme of Raison d'Être. During the closing topic, several seiyu communicate, exiting the role (“Out of Character”), sharing their impressions. The final tracks contain separate relatively short stories.

  • The first track is a tour of Sumomo in the company of Ti and Hideki (in the role of a bodyguard), already around Dragonfly's house. Young people talk about the connection between the charm of Tee and the permissibility to look like a pervert. Persocomes discuss Kotoko's underwear and the stupidity of Sumomo software. In the end, Sumomo and T being included in this by mimicking Kotoko bring her to hysteria.
  • The main story is called “Ti strikes in search” ( ち ぃ 探 し 回 る ) . Ti, Kotoko and Sumomo, not embarrassed by Hideki trying to practice, loudly argue how he will once again become a ronin. When they are kicked out, they ask Khibia for advice and return to apologize, but Hideki runs away screaming that he cannot find the most valuable bag. Persocomes make their own searches, in the course of which they encounter other heroes joining the case. As a result, by joint efforts, the bag is found, and the secret is revealed, what exactly - the most valuable for Hideki - was in it.
  • The final track is Khibia’s diary. There is a story about one of the days of a boring life that began with the appearance of Hideki, and thoughts are expressed about what different people and Persocomes show mutual affection for him. To the man who, as Khibia now believes, will make T's happiness.

Games

In 2002, Marvelous Entertainment released the video game "Chobits: Atashi Dake no Hito" for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance platform . This game, which was released only in Japan, was delivered separately and complete with a specially designed Game Boy Advance, on the case of which the Chobitov logo is applied. [44] [45] The author of a review of the site Tokidokijournal.com describes the game as an uncomplicated text adventure with mini- games based on anime, and notes that his lack of knowledge of the Japanese language did not prevent him from completing Atashi Dake no Hito several times to the end. The game technologically does not impress the browser, but the sound and graphics are rated highly, and the game itself is called generally fun. [45]

In addition, in 2003, Broccoli released a game in the genre of dating simulator “Chobits: Chii Dake no Hito” for Playstation 2 . [46] She also came out only in Japan.

“Chobits” is one of the most popular and successful works of CLAMP. [5] [6] [47] American critics of Anime News Network (ANN) call the series yet another pearl of this studio’s talent, and believe that by developing a simple story about a meeting between a young man and a robot , CLAMP created a charming story that is deeper than It seems at first glance. A successful combination of animation, character design, music and even voice acting create a powerful work that delights fans of the romantic comedy genre. [25] Moreover, the work is fully aware of the patterns of the genre and does not hesitate to joke about the stereotype of love between an ordinary person and a girl with mysterious powers, whose fans it is designed for, often balancing on the verge of a parody. [12] A DVDVerdict.com reviewer calls the series "touching and fun." [5] The online magazine Animefringe notes that, as in previous CLAMP works, “there are a lot of romance and humor in“ Chobits ”, as well as healthy didacticism .” [48] Mania.com notes interesting characters and good humor, although Hideki, in the opinion of the reviewer, "resembles all the anime characters combined." [49] Julie Davis in Anime Classics ZETTAI! 100 Must-See Japanese Animation Masterpieces draws attention to a beautiful and undoubtedly feminine image style. [50]

One of the drawbacks of this anime is that the plot develops after the fan service , [51] which does not contribute to the development of the plot or the disclosure of character images. For example, there are episodes in the anime where Ty buys lingerie or goes to the beach, which THEManime.org calls a waste of screen time. [39] Scenes with erotic connotations are in both the anime and manga. Quite often, the question of fetishization is raised: one of the characters owns a whole harem of Persians dressed up as French maids. [14] Mokona , the lead artist of the project, excelled herself by combining innocence and grace with bondage and pin -up. [13] One of the authors of Animefringe describes an incident that occurred at a local bookstore: the manga was withdrawn from sale because the manager considered Chobitov " child pornography ." [52] According to critics, despite the fact that the first 15 episodes of the anime contain a lot of jokes related to women's underwear , the ending of the series has become what many fans have been waiting for, who appreciate touching romance and drama elements, emphasized by beautiful animation. Although the critic DVDVerdict.com was disappointed that the main, in his opinion, question of the series did not find the answer: “Does Hideki love Chobi Chi?” [5]

It is noted that the main theme of the work is the relationship with the android that looks like a person, although it has already been raised in other works, for example, in “ Ghost in the Shell ” and “ Armitage ” , in “Chobits” it differs greatly from them in performance. [25] From the very beginning, Hideki have repeatedly warned that, despite their appearance, the Persians are just cars, replacing the usual routers, computers and cellular phones, and too much attachment to them can turn out to be a tragedy. [12] Tee's job as a welder, where she was only required to welcome visitors, largely reflects existing positions in the real world in which women only need to look good and repeat the same automatic actions throughout the day. And here the Chobits raise the question: what if we start replacing people with machines, to what extent can this continue? The answer should be "love." If T and Hideki can love each other, then this love is as real as any other. [14] Anime News Network believes that Hideki’s choice of her beloved chobit Tee and not a woman “out of blood and flesh” has become an interesting issue that has not yet been so deeply and comprehensively explored in other anime series. They appreciated the fact that the series is still dedicated to romance and mutual love, rather than sexual issues, which, in their opinion, was a big step forward in their genre, despite the sexist overtones of “Chobits”. [53] Jason Thompson also drew attention to this, calling the manga one of the sexiest and cutest in its genre. [13] The reviewer of Mania.com, on the contrary, expresses the opinion that the “Chobits” are not a breakthrough in their genre, although they generally speak positively about the work. [54] He writes that Chobits is an interesting, albeit somewhat uneven, series. [54]

Mania.com praises the anime soundtrack , giving him 4 out of 5 points. [6] Akemi's Anime World (AAW) writes: “It’s infrequent in anime to have such a good set of musical compositions, and each song fits perfectly into the narrative.” [55] Seiyu , actors who voice the characters, are given special praise. [54]

Relationship with other works

CLAMP studio often uses references to previous works in its works. The creator of Ti and the husband of Chitose - Itiro Mihara - is also responsible for creating the arena of the angels in the eponymous work, where he is one of the main characters. In the anime version of "Chobits" there is no indication of this connection. [56] In the sixth volume of the manga, Ti goes to buy Hideki's gift to a store called “Piffle Princess” . The same store is mentioned in the second volume of Legal Drug . [56] In the manga among visitors to Ueda's confectionery, you can see Somomi Daydoji, the mother of Tomoyo, one of the main characters of Cardcaptor Sakura . [56]

Hideki’s adventures in the city as a student waiting a year to try to enter the university again are in many ways similar to the adventures of Godai, the hero of the manga Rumiko Takahashi Maison Ikkoku . Both characters rent a small apartment in an old building, where an attractive woman works as a manager. For the first time, Hideki sees her with a broom in her hands, sweeping at the entrance - a classic image of the heroine from Maison Ikkoku . [14]

In the 11th episode of Chobits, one can observe parody posters for the posters for the films Spider-Man and Turn-A Gundam . [42]

In the anime “ Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE ” you can see at least four heroes of the “Chobits”. In the first episode, Ti talks to Fay right before he meets the measurement witch . The Persocoms Sumomo and Kotoko are shown on the top floor of the tower in 22 episodes (8 volume manga). [57] A character named Chitose appears in the 24 episode. [58]

Some of the characters and places in the anime Kobato are taken from the “Chobits”: Chitose Mihara (Chitose Khibiya), the chobits themselves, characters from the Hiroyasu Ueda and Yumi Omura confectionery.
